p.1

The provision is good

Children thoroughly enjoy their experiences with the friendly, caring childminder. The toddlers and young children arrive with enthusiasm. They show they are extremely settled and are motivated to learn. Every child receives nurturing support, praise and encouragement from the childminder. Children relate well to the childminder and show confidence to interact with unfamiliar people. They learn to play cooperatively and to show kindness to others from a young age.

p.2

The provision is good

The young children explore, investigate and join in with the good range of activities that the childminder plans to promote their learning. The childminder knows each child's likes, dislikes and abilities. She routinely asks children what they want to play with and embraces their ideas. The childminder knows what children need to learn next and extends children's learning as they go about their play, asking questions to promote their language, thinking and understanding of the world. For example, she talks to children about their recent holidays and, together, they look at photos shared by parents. Children show interest in the lives of others.

p.2

The provision is good

All children develop a love for books. They snuggle up together on the childminder's lap and show great interest as the childminder reads to them. They smile as the childminder reads the story in an expressive, lively way. The childminder encourages children to look at the illustrations, and they excitedly take turns to lift the flaps to reveal the pictures beneath.

n The childminder fosters children's self-esteem. She shows genuine excitement when children achieve. For example, a toddler receives high praise when she hears them say a new word and when an older child proudly shows the childminder their colouring. The childminder teaches children good manners. She helps them to follow instructions well and to learn to take turns and share. n Toddlers receive care tailored to their individual needs to ensure their physical and emotional well-being. The childminder changes nappies promptly to avoid toddlers' discomfort and teaches children to wipe their hands and faces before meals. She gives reassuring cuddles as needed, identifies and responds sensitively to signs of hunger and adapts her routine to enable children to nap as required. n The childminder makes good use of her garden, particularly during warmer months, to promote children's learning. Children have good opportunities to

increase their agility using play resources in the garden. Watched closely by the vigilant childminder, toddlers practise their newly acquired walking skills and learn to negotiate different ground levels safely. Older children climb up and down equipment, knowing the childminder is on hand to offer support as

Children gain an understanding of the world as the childminder encourages them to listen to environmental sounds, such as aeroplanes flying overhead, and to observe the activity of birds and squirrels. Children show awe and wonder when they find a spider. n The childminder promotes children's communication and language development well. She narrates children's play and introduces new words to extend their developing vocabularies instinctively. She responds well to children's non-verbal communication, as the young children make their needs known. n The childminder instinctively introduces children to some mathematical concepts, such as size, shape and quantity. For example, she names the shapes as the young children learn to complete tray puzzles. Children find the 'blue circle' and

repeat the shape names they hear. They join in as the childminder counts items. n Each day, the childminder takes children out to enhance their play and learning experiences. For example, children develop their social skills at toddler groups and music classes and increase their physical skills at local parks. n The childminder works in close partnership with parents to identify where children are in their learning from the outset and to support their ongoing development. Parents report that their children are settled and very happy in the childminder's care. They receive regular information about their children's progress and appreciate regular photos of their children's experiences. However, the childminder does not work in partnership with other settings children attend to create two-way sharing of information to support children's learning further.
