Information about this inspection
the care of children the safety of children the effectiveness of leaders and managers. Inspectors have looked closely at the experiences and progress of children, using the social care common inspection framework. This assurance inspection was carried out under the Care Standards Act 2000 to assess the effectiveness of the service, how it meets the core functions of the service as set out in legislation, and to consider how well it complies with The Children’s Homes (England) Regulations 2015 and the ‘Guide to the Children’s Homes Regulations, including the quality standards’. p.1
Findings from the inspection
We did not identify any serious or widespread concerns in relation to the care or protection of children at this assurance inspection.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
At the time of the inspection, no children were living in the home. One child had recently been supported to move into a placement closer to their family and education provision. Leaders had considered the child’s views and wishes in their decision-making. There was effective communication and care planning with the local authority. As a result, an appropriate placement was found, and the move was positive for the child.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
The environment is warm and welcoming. There has been recent redecoration in the home, which provides a more child-friendly feel. There are a selection of games and jigsaw puzzles ready for use. Children’s bedrooms have been redecorated and are ready for personalisation.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
Leaders are consistent in their monitoring of the home. The registered manager completes a bimonthly audit on the home. This is a robust system that covers incident reviews, health and safety and children’s discussions. This allows the manager to have better oversight.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
Physical interventions are managed safely. Staff use trained techniques and make sure that restraints occur for the least amount of time. Staff try to de-escalate complex behaviours before needing to use interventions. This has supported staff in maintaining positive relationships with children.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
The home is sufficiently staffed with a consistent staff team working in the home. This has provided a sense of security for children.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
Leaders and staff support children’s health needs well. Where concerns have been raised in relation to smoking and drug use, staff have supported children with intervention, such as medical appointments and making independent referrals. Staff complete regular key-work sessions with children where concerns arise. As a result, this has led to a reduction in the use of drugs and smoking.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
Staff respond to incidents well. They show curiosity to explore how children are feeling and use their relationships to promote positive behaviours. Missing incidents are managed appropriately. Staff speak with relevant professionals and update risk management plans accordingly. However, the recording of some incidents lacks information in areas. Recommendations
The registered person should ensure that staff are familiar with the home’s policies on record-keeping and understand the importance of careful, objective and clear recording. Information about the child must always be recorded in a way that will be helpful to the child.
