p.1

The provision is good

Children are engaged and motivated to learn throughout their time with the thoughtful and reflective childminder. They make good progress overall in all aspects of their learning and are well prepared for the next stage in their education and development. Children build well on their vocabulary and language skills as they play, listen to stories and talk to the childminder. For example, as they eat their lunch, babies and young children repeat words and sounds that they hear the childminder use in her conversations with them, such as 'tasty' and 'fruity'. The childminder encourages them to articulate their thoughts about what they would like to play with or do next.

p.2

The provision is good

Children are well behaved and feel safe and secure. They increasingly learn to recognise their emotions and play safely alongside others indoors and outdoors. Children rise to the childminder's high expectations and learn to become confident and independent in managing their play and making decisions and choices. The childminder helps babies, for example, to recognise when they are tired and to settle quickly to sleep. Parents appreciate the strong steps the childminder takes to provide a calm and welcoming environment and to offer useful guidance for learning at home.

need to do better?

n The childminder has developed a thoughtful and exciting curriculum overall. She supports children to systematically develop their knowledge and understanding in most aspects of their learning effectively. However, children's mark-making and fine motor skills are not as consistently promoted as other areas of development. For example, they have limited access to drawing, painting and other mark-making tasks they can regularly choose for themselves in their free play. n The childminder is passionate about her role and highly ambitious for all children to make the most of their time with her. She makes good use of frequent training opportunities, such as early years training, personal research and weekly discussions with other child carers, to review and develop the quality of her provision. n The childminder focuses strongly on developing the highest standards of children's communication and language skills. Children join in a wide range of

songs and stories, and they engage in carefully considered conversations that help them remember and use their developing vocabulary. She helps children to use their emerging language skills through questions such as 'I wonder why…' or 'what do you think will happen?' and encourages them to build on their responses. n Children's love of reading is strongly promoted and supports their developing

For instance, they progress from learning to handle books and touching shiny, rough and smooth textures through lifting flaps to following the plot of a story and anticipating what will happen next. She provides a wide range of fiction and non-fiction for children to enjoy throughout the day. n The childminder identifies any gaps in children's learning and development, including children with special educational needs and/or disabilities, at an early stage. She works closely with parents and uses the advice from other professionals, such as speech therapists and health visitors, to support children's learning. She creates a calm and warm environment where children feel safe and respected. n Children's good behaviour and manners are very well supported. They respond well, for instance, to the kind and gentle examples set by the childminder to say

'please' and 'thank you' as they reach for things. The childminder makes very good use of positive praise, such as when she helps babies share their toys and to play alongside other children.
