p.1
The provision is inadequate
Weaknesses in the leadership and management of the nursery have an impact on the safety and well-being of children. A lack of effective risk assessment means that the provider cannot assure the suitability of some materials used in children's play. Records pertinent to the effective management of the nursery are not easily accessible. Complaints are not managed effectively. Although some improvements have been made in relation to staff's understanding of learning and development, the quality of teaching remains variable. As a result, children do not benefit from an ambitious curriculum based on what the staff know children can already do.
p.2
The provision is inadequate
Despite these weaknesses, children enjoy their nursery day. They have good relationships with the staff and are provided with a selection of play and learning opportunities both indoors and outdoors. Children understand the nursery routine and follow staff's directions well. Staff encourage children's independence in everyday activities, such as serving their own meals and clearing their plates when they have finished eating. Babies receive warm, affectionate care from staff who sit with them, read stories and encourage them to explore the resources available.
p.2
need to do better?
n The management team has made a number of improvements to the nursery since the last inspection to enhance the provision for children. The space available in each of the rooms has been reviewed and increased where needed to meet the space requirements of the 'Statutory framework for the early years foundations stage'. Children are now provided with a wider selection of resources and have better opportunities to guide their own play. n The provider has reviewed and developed the key-person system to help staff to understand their responsibilities with regards to tailoring care and learning to individual children. Improvements have been made to promote children's health. The provider is developing ways to create opportunities for children to use their home language in their play and how to support their language development at home. n Staff have received some training since the last inspection to help to develop

their understanding of the learning and development requirements. However, this new learning has only recently been completed and is not yet embedded well enough to ensure strong and consistent teaching across the staff team. n Staff do not effectively risk assess the materials they use in activities to ensure that they are safe and suitable for children to play with. The provider and staff demonstrate poor understanding of the process and the importance of effective risk assessment. As a result, children's safety is potentially compromised. n The provider does not have effective arrangements for managing complaints. Concerns are not always recognised as a complaint and therefore, not managed

27 January 2025 as such. As a result, there is no clear record of complaints detailing what action the provider has taken to resolve any concerns and how they have responded to the complainant within the required time frames. n The arrangements for record-keeping are weak. Relevant records which are pertinent to the effective running of the nursery are not easily accessible. n Children generally engage in free play, which means that much of their learning is incidental. Adult-led activities are not fully thought through. While staff know the children and can identify some appropriate next steps to help them progress in their learning, these are not embedded in their play. Staff do not use effective questioning skills to extend and enhance children's knowledge. n Children are provided with opportunities to explore sensory materials, such as paint, cooked pasta and play dough. Younger children enjoy the feeling of paint

squishing through their fingers and have fun painting their hands and arms. n Staff who have dedicated roles to support children with special educational needs and/or disabilities understand their role. They provide effective support to enable children to be included in activities and demonstrate a good understanding of children's needs. n Staff communicate daily with parents through online messages and during the morning and end-of-session handovers.
