p.1
The provision is good
Children form strong, warm bonds with the childminder. They come and find her for comfort and reassurance when needed. Children have strong friendships with their peers. They are happy to spend time playing alongside each other.
p.2
The provision is good
The childminder plans a curriculum that supports children's next steps in learning and builds on their interests. During 'science week' children are learning about change. The children enjoy exploring the different colours of play dough. The childminder encourages children to use and understand key words while they 'press', 'roll' and 'mix'. Children smile in excitement when they observe the colours change. Children are able to talk about their observations and recall what they did using the key words used by the childminder. All children make good progress, including those children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND).
p.2
The provision is good
The childminder is a good role model and sets consistent expectations of behaviour. She provides support if conflict arises and reinforces positive behaviour by encouraging turn taking and sharing. The childminder uses songs during transitions, such as a 'tidy-up' song and a 'line-up' song. Most children act quickly when they hear these songs, routines are predictable and established.

need to do better?
n The childminder encourages children to think for themselves. For example, during play, she uses effective questions. The childminder asks them to tell her why they have used selected colours for their drawings. When younger children name some coloured objects incorrectly, she encourages them to try again. She waits patiently and praises the children when they correct themselves. n Overall, the curriculum for physical development is good. Children develop their large muscle groups as they ride on toys and walk on balance beams. Children engage in fine motor skill activities as they thread spaghetti through colanders. At times, children's play is interrupted and cut short by staff when they move them onto other activities or routines. As a result, some children can get upset and resist the transition. n Children who speak English as an additional language make good progress from their starting points. The childminder gathers information from parents about

children's home language. The children benefit from weekly Spanish and French lessons to help celebrate children's heritage. The childminder uses key words in children's home language to help them convey their wants and needs. n The childminder is kind and attentive, she is quick to notice if children are becoming upset and offer comfort. However, she does not always consider how high noise levels impact children's emotions and interactions with others. On occasions, some children become increasingly overwhelmed as the noise levels

She recently completed specific mathematics training, focused on boys. She encouraged her assistants to attend to support their skills further. The childminder had noted that some of the children were reluctant to engage in maths-based activities. Since attending the training the childminder has been able to incorporate this learning in everyday activities.
