p.1

The provision requires improvement

Staff are warm, kind and welcoming. They greet children and their families with smiles. Children happily enter the nursery and show they trust and like the staff who look after them. Staff gently remind children of the rules in place to keep them safe. Children listen and comply happily with requests. They behave typically for their age.

p.2

The provision requires improvement

Leaders have identified broadly what they want children to learn. Staff ensure babies have the space they need to practise crawling and early walking. Staff build babies' vocabulary, using simple words and phrases. Children with special educational needs and/or disabilities are identified and provided with effective support to join in and make progress. However, there are inconsistencies in staff practice in helping older children learn well from what is on offer. Overall, staff deliver adult-led activities effectively. Children enjoy listening to stories and show they are learning how stories are structured. Staff extend children's physical, mathematical and language skills as they make dough together. However, during periods when children can explore more freely staff are less confident in their role. Often, staff quickly remove resources or change activities rather than helping children use them purposefully. At these times, staff focus less on what children

need to learn, and more on what children like to do. This limits children's opportunities to develop new skills, knowledge and interests. Over the course of the day children's focus and concentration lessen.

n Leaders have good intentions. They know the children who come to nursery well. They recognise that some children start with gaps in their skills or knowledge. They plan broadly how they will help fill these gaps and help children catch up with their peers. However, they do not monitor staff practice closely enough to identify when staff need support to put these curriculum aims into practice. This leads to inconsistencies in the quality of teaching. n Overall, staff meet babies needs well. Babies move confidently around the room, and show delight in the resources available. Staff effectively develop babies' language and play skills. For example, they show babies how to drink pretend cups of tea and use clear language such as 'cup' 'saucer' and 'yes please'. Babies watch, copy and repeat, showing they are learning well from these interactions. n Throughout the nursery staff interact with children in ways that help their

language development. Staff speak clearly to children, listening to what they say and engaging in back-and- forth conversations. Children confidently talk to adults and other children. n Staff initially offer older children a learning environment based on what they want children to learn next. They set up role-play areas to help children learn

20 February 2025 about different people that help them. They set up activities to teach children useful skills, such as how to cut with scissors. However, they do not consistently help children use these resources purposefully. When children are not initially drawn to these activities, staff swiftly replace them with something else, where the learning intent is less clearly defined. These swift changes impact on children's ability to focus and concentrate. It also means that children often engage in repetitive play that does not build on what they already know or can do. n Staff meet children's care needs with dignity and kindness. They gently sing to babies as they change their nappies. They help older children become more independent in meeting their own personal care needs. They ensure children have regular healthy snacks and opportunities to be outside in the fresh air. This all adds to children's sense of well-being and promotes their independence and

good health. n Parents are full of praise for staff. Parents say they feel 'listened to' and 'respected'. Staff use these warm partnerships especially effectively to help children settle and feel part of nursery life. They find out useful information about children's interests and home life. They then use what they know well to show interest in children's lives and build trusting relationships. n The nursery has been through a period of change which has led to changes in leadership. Leaders have focused effectively on some aspects of their role, such as ensuring additional funding is used effectively. They recognise there is work to be done in developing their own confidence and skills in monitoring and improving staff practice and understanding of their role.
