p.1

Information about this inspection

 the care of children  the safety of children  the effectiveness of leaders and managers. The inspector has looked closely at the experiences and progress of children, using the social care common inspection framework. This assurance inspection was carried out under the Care Standards Act 2000 to assess the effectiveness of the service, how it meets the core functions of the service as set out in legislation, and to consider how well it complies with The Children’s Homes (England) Regulations 2015 and the ‘Guide to the Children’s Homes Regulations, including the quality standards’. Assurance inspection report for children’s home: 2747219 2

p.1

Findings from the inspection

Ofsted did not identify any serious or widespread concerns in relation to the care or protection of children at this assurance inspection.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

There have been significant changes to the leadership and staffing within the home. These changes have supported the stabilisation of the staff team. This means that staff working in the home are permanent members of staff. This results in the child receiving consistent care.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

Staff have implemented and are maintaining clear routines and boundaries for the child. Specialist professionals have been identified and commissioned by the provider to support staff to have a better understanding of driving factors behind the child’s behaviour. Staff are also supported to look at appropriate responses to minimise and manage these behaviours. Staff have worked incredibly hard to put these strategies into action. This has resulted in a reduction of the frequency and severity of incidents.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

The child has good relationships with most members of staff. Staff are aware of the risks around some of the child’s interactions. They balance these risks well with providing the child with appropriate comfort and affection. Staff use physical intervention appropriately to keep everyone safe. Reflective conversations are held with staff and the child after a physical hold or guide has been used.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

Managers have good oversight of the home and children’s documents. When managers think recording could be improved, this is shared with staff so that they learn from this. Managers provide a good level of analysis after incidents, considering what has worked well and what could have been done differently. Staff and managers work collaboratively with other professionals involved in supporting the child. This ensures that as the understanding of the child develops, the child’s relevant plans reflect this.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

Staff have implemented creative ideas to support the child’s health needs. This includes regular appointments at the dentist, so the child can build a trusting relationship with the dentist and allow much-needed dental work to be completed without this being distressing.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

The child is attending education daily. This is a much-reduced timetable, but this further supports a positive daily routine. Managers advocate for a more suitable education arrangement for the child and are working in partnership with social care and the virtual school to develop a plan.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

The maintenance of the home has much improved. However, there remains some wear and tear particularly to outside of the home which is unsightly. The child is known to pick at the door handles, causing them to come off, potentially meaning Assurance inspection report for children’s home: 2747219 3 the child or a member of staff could get stuck in a room. There has been no pro- active response to address this.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

There have been three allegations against staff within this inspection timeframe. Two out of the three were managed appropriately, with the right action taken. It was difficult to effectively evaluate the third as the provider did not have full records of the investigation or conclusion of the allegations.
