p.2
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
The home has the feel of a family home. C hildren are provided with a very good level of care. They are happy and enjoy spending time with the staff. Staff recognise and promote the individuality of each child. This has enabled children to develop strong relationships and bonds.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
The children can make their views known about how they want their bedrooms to look. Staff do all they can to achieve this. Children arrange their rooms according to their wishes and staff are respectful of their decision.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
Children’s views about which friends and family they would like to stay in touch with are considered. Staff work well with people who are important to children. They recognise that this part of their work is essential for children who live a long way from their own communities. Staff understand and appreciate the importance of maintaining important relationships for children.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
Since the last inspection, three children have left the home. Whenever possible, moves from the home are well planned. On two occasions, this was not possible. Both children were moved for safety reasons. The moves were managed sympathetically so that children could have positive endings. Where possible, contact is maintained with the children to make sure these moves are completed with sensitivity.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
Children’s health needs are met, and they are generally healthy. Staff make necessary health appointments and will support children to attend. However, staff did not support one child to fully understand the impact of vaping. The child was encouraged to vape outside the immediate boundaries of the home and, on occasions, has done this late evening or early in the morning. The child has not been helped to manage harmful behaviours. A referral has been made to request the specialist support required from external professional agencies.
p.3
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
The manager and staff have taken appropriate action to help keep children safe. However, despite every effort, situations out of the staff’s control have meant that, at times, children have been exposed to higher-risk situations. The manager and staff are confident and well equipped to manage safeguarding incidents.
p.3
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
Allegations made by children have been taken seriously. Managers have taken swift action to address these. Investigations have involved safeguarding partners appropriately. This has helped children know they have been listened to and that their safety is important. Inspection report for children’s home: 2685330 4 Children have built very trusting, secure attachments with staff in a short period of time. This has enabled children to talk to staff about any worries that they have. Children say that they feel safe and secure and can approach any member of staff.
p.3
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
All the children have specific views about the food they eat. Therefore, it can be difficult to make one meal that all the children will eat. Staff adapt to these needs and coordinate the menu so that the children eat food that they enjoy.
p.4
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
Leaders did not follow the required safe recruitment processes thoroughly when appointing one staff member. Leaders have not been professionally curious when carrying out recruitment checks for staff from overseas. They have failed to request overseas checks and to ensure that any previous employment is considered. This would provide assurance that staff are safe to work with children. Consequently, there is a risk that unsuitable staff may be employed to care for children. This shortfall was discovered on inspection and had not been noticed previously.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
The registered manager has the skills and experience to provide good, effective management of the home. The manager is supported by a competent deputy manager. There is a stable team of experienced staff. This means that children receive care from staff they know and trust.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
There is very good multi-agency working with other professionals. External agencies say that managers and staff support children well and that communication is good.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
Staff feel highly valued and supported. Staff say they like their work. They speak positively and with pride about the children they care for. Morale is high and good levels of staff retention have ensured that children experience a high level of consistency in their care.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
Supervision sessions are held regularly and allow staff to reflect on any incidents in the home to improve their practice.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
Managers ensure that team meetings are held regularly and are productive. The current needs of children are discussed in detail. Staff feel able to contribute to the meetings.
p.4
