Information about this inspection
the care of children the safety of children the effectiveness of leaders and managers. The inspector has looked closely at the experiences and progress of children, using the social care common inspection framework. This assurance inspection was carried out under the Care Standards Act 2000 to assess the effectiveness of the service, how it meets the core functions of the service as set out in legislation, and to consider how well it complies with The Children’s Homes (England) Regulations 2015 and the ‘Guide to the Children’s Homes Regulations, including the quality standards’. p.1
Findings from the inspection
We did not identify serious or widespread concerns in relation to the care or protection of children at this assurance visit.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
One child was living at the home on the day of the visit. Since the last inspection, one child has moved out.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
The child is now registered at school. Staff work closely with education partners to encourage the child to attend school. Any reluctance from the child to attend is addressed through incentive-based rewards and consideration of alternative learning methods, such as combining classroom and online learning. However, leaders and managers have not ensured that the home is equipped with essential resources in order to help the child learn, as they are unable to access the home’s internet.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
Safety plans are detailed and comprehensive. They contain clear strategies to reduce the child’s risks. Strategies are reviewed regularly to ensure that safeguarding measures protect the child from harm.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
The child said that they feel safe and happy living in the home. They can identify staff that they can speak to about their well-being. Staff support the child to manage their behaviour and feelings safely through direct work on topics such as self-harm, which encourages the child to consider different coping strategies. Consequently, self-injurious behaviour has reduced.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
Records of significant events require improvement. Incidents do not always include a detailed account of the action staff take to safeguard children. The manager reviews incidents and adds comments. However, reviews do not consider the effectiveness of staff practice.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
Monitoring systems in place are not being used effectively. For example, the manager failed to identify that a room search following an incident had not been completed by staff. Consequently, areas of staff development are missed. Assurance inspection report for children’s home: SC456532 3
