p.1

The provision is inadequate

The childminder does not meet all of the requirements of the early years foundation stage. There are weaknesses in the safeguarding arrangements and the quality of education, which have a negative impact on children's safety and their overall learning experiences.

p.2

The provision is inadequate

The childminder's curriculum is not sequenced well enough to help children to be active and inquisitive learners. The childminder gives children too much information at a time, and children are not able to consolidate what they have learned. She places too much emphasis on teaching young children to learn to recite letters of the alphabet and numbers without helping them to build their knowledge gradually and understand what this means. This does not ensure that children make good progress across the prime areas of learning.

p.2

The provision is inadequate

The childminder works closely with parents and carers when children start attending, to help identify and meet children's care needs. Children have settled well in the childminder's care and demonstrate that they feel happy. However, the childminder does not ensure that she prioritises children's learning at all times. On some occasions, opportunities for teaching and learning are not prioritised as the childminder focuses on completing paperwork while children play by themselves. This does not ensure that children receive the interactions they need to support their language development.

p.2

The provision is inadequate

Generally, children behave well and are familiar with the routines. However, the childminder is not consistent in explaining to children about the importance of sharing and turn taking, to help minimise disruption to their play and support their attitudes to learning.

p.2

need to do better?

n The childminder does not have a secure knowledge and understanding of child protection. Although the childminder can recognise when there are concerns about a child's safety, she does not know the appropriate agency to report concerns to. Her lack of understanding of how to escalate safeguarding concerns about a child means that children's safety cannot be assured. n The childminder demonstrates a poor understanding of the ratio requirements. She is unable to explain how many children she is allowed to care for as a childminder at any given time. In addition, the childminder does not hold valid public liability insurance at all times as required. These breaches of requirements do not support the safety and well-being of children. n Children do not make the progress that they are capable of. The childminder is not clear about what she wants children to learn. She does not follow through

need to do better?

22 January 2025 with planned activities to achieve the desired learning outcome. For example, although the childminder had intended to teach children shapes and experiment with different textures, she did not implement these. Mostly, children tend to occupy themselves to keep busy, rather than actively learning. n The sequencing of the curriculum is weak, and learning activities do not meet children's ages and stages of development. The childminder provides a lot of information at once and does not allow children to consolidate their learning. For instance, she sits young children down to go through an alphabet chart and learn sounds that letters make as well as count to 30. When children mispronounce words or count incorrectly, the childminder does not take the time to correct them. This does not ensure that children develop secure foundations to support their next stage in learning. n The childminder is not consistent in teaching children to learn to share and take

turns, to help minimise disruptions to their play and increase their engagement in activities. Occasionally, she does not address incidents in sharing arising from children's play in the most effective way. Nonetheless, the childminder teaches children to be respectful. She encourages children to use 'please' and 'thank you' when asking for things. n Relationships between the childminder and children are warm. The childminder gets to know children well and builds secure attachments with them. She praises children for their accomplishments, which benefits their self-esteem. Children enjoy regular trips to the local library to take part in rhyme sessions and interact with other children to help their social skills. n The childminder accesses regular training and support from other early years professionals. However, she does not put what she learns into effective use to help drive improvements and ensure better outcomes for children.
