Information about this inspection
the care of children the safety of children the effectiveness of leaders and managers. The inspector has looked closely at the experiences and progress of children, using the social care common inspection framework. This assurance inspection was carried out under the Care Standards Act 2000 to assess the effectiveness of the service, how it meets the core functions of the service as set out in legislation, and to consider how well it complies with The Children’s Homes (England) Regulations 2015 and the ‘Guide to the Children’s Homes Regulations, including the quality standards’. p.1
Findings from the inspection
We did not identify any serious or widespread concerns in relation to the care or protection of children at this assurance inspection.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
The environment is safe for children. The home is clean, bright and welcoming.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
Leaders and managers have experienced a challenging start. The post for a registered manager became vacant in January 2025 and is yet to be filled. This is the provider’s first home, and the staff team is inexperienced. However, staff are supported by an experienced and involved responsible individual.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
Since the home registered with Ofsted, one child has lived at the home. Before the child moved in, leaders and managers carried out risk assessments and spoke to the child’s social worker. However, they did not speak to the child’s previous placement and therefore missed an opportunity to fully understand the child’s needs and risks. As a result, the child experienced significant disruption as the staff team did not have the necessary experience to meet his needs. Following a serious incident, the child moved out with immediate effect after 21 days living in the home.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
The child’s behaviour support plans and risk assessments include guidance for staff to follow to keep him safe. However, staff did not read the documents until after the child had moved into the home. This reduced staff’s ability to manage risks and may have resulted in inconsistent care for the child.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
Despite these shortfalls, leaders and managers have quickly updated risk assessments and plans following incidents. They have spoken with children and staff to better understand the incidents and how to prevent them in the future.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
Leaders and managers were proactive in raising concerns with the child’s social worker and putting measures in place to reduce risk, such as increasing the number of staff working with the child.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
Leaders and managers ensure that children are protected by safer recruitment practices. Staff feel well supported. They receive regular supervision and team meetings, which they find helpful. There is a comprehensive schedule of training, and staff complete an induction. Staff speak positively about the training they receive, identifying that they have learned a lot.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
However, some staff were working towards completing their induction while the child was living in the home, rather than before their arrival. Some of this training related to the practical care and safety of the child. Because of the staff team’s inexperience, this is likely to have affected the quality of the care the child received.
