p.1
The provision is inadequate
The childminder does not ensure that assistants have a good enough understanding of safeguarding matters to be able to identify and report child protection concerns. Assistants do not know the procedures to follow to respond to allegations. This does not support children's welfare in the event of a safeguarding concern.
p.2
The provision is inadequate
Children are happy in the childminder's care and they separate from their parents with ease on arrival. However, the childminder does not design and deliver a curriculum that ensures that all children experience a wide range of learning opportunities that build on what they already know and can do, or what they need to learn next. Planned activities do not consider the ages and needs of individual children taking part. Children often lose interest and become bored, which has a negative impact on their behaviour. Most of the children's day is filled with adult- led, whole-group activities that are not all well managed or age-appropriate. For example, children sit and wait for long lengths of time before song time begins. Children's opportunities to make choices, play and explore are limited. This hinders children's independence and confidence to have a go themselves.
p.2
The provision is inadequate
Adults' management of children's behaviour is not consistent. For example, staff's responses to children taking a toy from another are too variable. This does not support children to understand expectations and boundaries. However, any behaviours that could be a safety issue, such as children climbing, are quickly addressed by the childminder and her assistants.
p.2
need to do better?
n Children's safety cannot be assured. Although the childminder identifies the safeguarding implications of children calling her and assistants 'mom', she fails to take action and model the correct language for children. n The childminder does not have adequate supervision arrangements in place for her assistants. She fails to identify where their practice could be improved. This impacts negatively on her assistants' overall level of effectiveness and how well they can meet children's individual needs. For instance, assistants preparing meals for children are unfamiliar with the dietary needs of children present for the day. This potentially puts children's health and well-being at risk. n While the childminder knows some of the key skills and knowledge that children need to learn, she has not considered the content or sequence of her curriculum. The curriculum is poor and does not meet the children's individual

needs. Activities are not based on children's interests and what they need to achieve next. The childminder does not place enough focus on individual children's learning and development across the seven areas of learning. Children

need to do better?
6 December 2024 do not receive the necessary support from the childminder to engage them in purposeful learning, and to help them make good progress. n The childminder can assess and identify when children need additional support. She liaises with parents and makes referrals to professional services for support, such as speech and language therapy. However, she and her assistants lack the knowledge and understanding to promote children's vocabulary effectively. For example, they do not do enough to help children learn new words and build a wide range of vocabulary. Children spend long periods without any interaction from the childminder and her assistants. For example, they sit waiting for story time after lunch with limited interactions from adults. As a result, children become bored and leave the activity, but are brought back again. This hinders their learning opportunities. n Children take part in daily outdoor play. This provides children with some

opportunities to develop their gross motor skills. However, the outdoor environment does not provide children with a range of activities to help them make the best possible progress in all areas of learning. Resources are limited and activities are adult-led. For example, when children finish a group music and movement session, they are moved to an adult-led bubble blowing activity. This prevents children from making independent choices in their play and selecting resources with ease. n Children learn about effective hygiene practices, such as washing their hands before eating. The childminder provides children with healthy snacks and home- cooked meals. At mealtimes, the childminder and assistants do sit and engage with the children. This provides children with the opportunity to develop friendships with others. n Parents report their children are happy and look forward to attending the childminding setting.
