p.1

Information about this inspection

 the care of children  the safety of children  the effectiveness of leaders and managers. Inspectors have looked closely at the experiences and progress of children, using the social care common inspection framework. This assurance inspection was carried out under the Care Standards Act 2000 to assess the effectiveness of the service, how it meets the core functions of the service as set out in legislation, and to consider how well it complies with The Children’s Homes (England) Regulations 2015 and the ‘Guide to the Children’s Homes Regulations, including the quality standards’. Assurance inspection report for children’s home: SC358638 2

p.1

Findings from the inspection

We did not identify any serious or widespread concerns in relation to the care or protection of children at this assurance inspection.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

A child who had lived at the home since the last inspection has recently moved out. Although the move was urgent, due to an increase in risk, it was well planned. The manager spoke to the child about the plan and about their new home. The child was able to meet their new staff before they moved. Involving children in their plans helps to ensure that they are well prepared.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

Staff provided the child with opportunities to learn new skills, explore their interests and engage in the wider community. For example, the child enjoyed going to a roller-skating session and football training and joined local youth clubs. Supporting children to explore their interests helps to develop their self-esteem and confidence.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

Staff and the manager prioritise education. The manager advocated for the child to ensure that they had what they needed. The child’s teacher recognised the positive impact the support of the manager and staff had for the child in education. They said that, as a result, the child had made good progress.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

The manager ensures that plans and risk assessments are regularly updated and provide staff with clear guidance on the steps they need to take to respond to risk. Incidents when the child went missing from home were responded to well by staff and records of incidents are clear and detailed. When the risks relating to the child going missing from home increased, the manager discussed concerns with other professionals and agreed clear measures to reduce the risks. Good multi-agency working helps to ensure that risks are properly considered.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

The manager held the child’s views at the centre of her decision-making and continually gathered the child’s views in her day-to-day practice and monitoring of the home. The manager also ensured that the child’s views were heard by people independent of the home. For example, the child benefited from the support of an independent advocate who visited them regularly. Listening to children’s views helps to ensure that they feel valued and that their needs are understood.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

The manager completes comprehensive evaluations after incidents, which identify learning. As a result, staff practice is continually improving and developing.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

The manager has effective systems in place for monitoring and evaluating the quality of care. Comprehensive trackers help the manager to identify relevant trends. The manager uses clear chronologies as evidence to support decision- making and in discussions with external professionals. Clear information-sharing helps to ensure that decisions made about children’s care are well informed. Assurance inspection report for children’s home: SC358638 3 A requirement raised at the last inspection has been met. There were no requirements or recommendations made at this inspection.
