p.1

The provision requires improvement

The childminder has built secure attachments with the children who attend. She provides them with a warm welcome when they arrive. Children quickly settle into the playroom and when they are feeling unsure seek a reassuring cuddle from the childminder. However, the childminder does not consistently plan a well-sequenced, ambitious, and challenging curriculum for all children. For example, the childminder sets out some activities for children to explore. Children join in with the childminder while counting the shapes on the activity cube. They repeat the names of the colours they can see supporting their understanding of some mathematical concepts. However, due to the lack of stimulating and challenging activities, children struggle to keep their concentration and move away quickly from these. This means not all children are making the progress they are capable of in their learning.

p.2

The provision requires improvement

The childminder is prompt to attend to children's personal care needs. She is kind, respectful and caring as she carries out toileting routines with them. For example, the childminder talks soothingly to younger children as she asks them if she can change their nappy and talks to them about what is happening next. However, she has not ensured she is meeting all the statutory requirements and does not hold a current and valid paediatric first aid qualification.

need to do better?

n The curriculum lacks ambition. The childminder does not always consider effective ways to plan stimulating and challenging activities for children. At times activities are mundane and often the same. Children struggle to stay focused and often wander between the activities. This means children are not effectively engaging well enough in their learning to make expected progress. Despite this, the childminder does know the children well and is effective at meeting their emotional needs. n The childminder has attended some mandatory training, such as safeguarding. However, she does not hold a valid paediatric first aid qualification. That said, she does demonstrate appropriate knowledge and understanding of how to administer first aid treatment in the event of an emergency, accident, or injury. Although this is a breach of the statutory requirement, children's safety is not significantly compromised. n The childminder maintains some records, she gathers information about the

children attending and their learning. However, she is not consistent with completing records of children's hours of attendance. That said, she is able to explain the reason these records must be maintained in order to safeguard children. n During activities, children engage in some conversations. They talk about what

17 December 2024 they have found as they explore the different animals. However, there are times when the childminder does not use the correct language and refers to a horse as a 'Gee-Gee' or a dog as a 'Doggie'. This does not enable children to effectively develop their vocabulary and speaking skills. n Parents speak positively of the care their children receive. They comment the childminder shares updates of what they have been doing during their time at the home and areas the childminder has identified with their learning. The childminder shares information with other settings children attend to enable them to be supported with their learning and development whilst attending more than one setting. n Children celebrate some festivals and cultural events. For example, they try Chinese food during Lunar New year to enable them to learn about differences and similarities in the world around them. The childminder takes children on

outings to go and visit places in the community, such as the shops or visiting the park. Children actively explore the equipment in the park as they climb on the climbing frame to develop their physical skills. n The childminder reminds children how to keep themselves safe. She encourages children who like to explore smaller equipment to explore these out of reach of younger children. This helps children to learn about keeping themselves and others safe. n Children are well-mannered. They are polite and respectful to their friends during play and say 'please' and 'thank you' as they share their toys. The childminder supports their emotional well-being through positive praise and encouragement during activities. She tries to encourage children to try things for themselves and when they are successful children smile in response to the words of encouragement.
