p.1

The provision is good

Children feel safe and secure in the childminder's setting. They say that the childminder is kind and caring and that she always helps them. Children recall many happy memories as part of their journey with the childminder. For example, they discuss their visits to the park and enjoying crafting with the childminder's help. Parents echo the children's warm feelings. They feel that the childminder is instrumental in their children's care and early years education.

p.2

The provision is good

The childminder has a well-sequenced curriculum that focuses on the building blocks that children need to prepare them for their next stage. Her vision aims to support children to be happy, healthy and ready to learn. A key component of her curriculum is personal, social and emotional development. This is to ensure children develop the self-regulation skills and strategies they need to thrive. For example, the childminder models how to help children make relationships and develop their skills to be able to compromise and negotiate, as they prepare for school life. This helps children to learn and develop well.

p.2

The provision is good

The childminder models practical everyday procedures to help children learn how to keep themselves and others safe. Children learn how to tidy up at key times to clear the floor of hazards. They begin to contribute to the tidy-up routines and develop a sense of responsibility and teamwork.

need to do better?

n The childminder priorities partnerships with parents to inform her about children's starting points. All children benefit from the childminder's visits to their home before they start attending her setting. This first contact helps the childminder to understand children's interests and what they already know and can do. This helps her to plan successfully for children to settle quickly and make progress in their learning and development. n Children develop their mathematical skills through careful and purposefully led play. The childminder expertly uses mathematical language when children explore activities, tailoring this to each child's needs to help children to make progress. For example, when children empty and fill containers, she models the language of size and measurement, helping children to build on key concepts and stretch their knowledge and understanding. n The childminder's flexible routines support children to explore through their

interests. She skilfully builds on what children already know to help them meet their milestones. For example, the childminder carefully repeats key phrases or words to help children to build their vocabulary, through their play. Consequently, children make progress in their communication and language. n The childminder carefully plans and organises both familiar and new stories for

This helps children to grow their love for reading and develop their early literacy skills. n The childminder thoughtfully prepares healthy meals for children to enjoy a well- balanced diet. She teaches children in fun ways about the different food groups they need to eat. For example, children can spin a food wheel to help the childminder make decisions about the food available. Therefore, children build on what they already know about nutrition to help them understand how eating well will fuel their body. n The childminder evaluates her setting with precision. She develops her understanding of her practice through professional conversations with other childminders. Furthermore, she accesses training and development tailored to

the needs of the children in her setting. For example, recent 'emotion coaching' training has supported her to help children develop the self-regulation strategies they need, helping them understand and manage their feelings and behaviour. This helps children to make progress in their personal, social and emotional development. n Children enjoy playing and learning with the childminder, who encourages them to build on what they already know and can do. At times, the childminder helps children to choose what they would like to play with and how they would like to do things. However, some resources are not easily accessible for the younger children. This means some children miss opportunities to be able to lead their own play and learn how to make independent choices.
