p.1
The provision is good
Children settle well in this childminding setting. They form secure attachments with the childminder and seek her out for emotional support when they require it. The childminder offers flexible settling-in sessions so that children can become familiar with their environment. She also gains important information from home, which supports the effective transition into the childminder's care. The childminder works alongside another registered childminder, and they share responsibility of all children.
p.2
The provision is good
The childminder supports children with their physical development and provides opportunities for building core strength. The childminder also takes children to indoor soft-play activities to help build their large muscle skills. She encourages positive behaviour, giving reasons why children cannot do something. For example, the childminder reminds children not to pull backwards on the pushchair and explains that they could hurt themselves. The children listen and respond.
p.2
The provision is good
Children enjoy playing with resources in an open-plan kitchen and living area. They love to complete jigsaws and build with construction resources. They invite the childminder to join their play by asking questions and offering comments on their structures. Children are proud when they build a box and put a character inside, and the childminder offers praise and celebration, which promotes children's self- esteem.

need to do better?
n The childminder has a good understanding of the children and what their next steps in learning are. She can talk confidently about what children are working on next. However, sometimes younger children are not always engaged in learning as well as they could be. Therefore, there is scope to improve how all children's next steps in learning are always considered when activities are planned. n The childminder engages children in high-quality interactions. She asks challenging questions of older children to extend their learning. For example, during a counting activity, the childminder asks children how many they would have if they were to add or take away an item. Children are able to give the appropriate answer, demonstrating their knowledge. n The childminder promotes children's communication and language development. Children gather round eagerly as she reads stories on the sofa. Books are readily

available to the children, and the childminder encourages them to go to the basket to choose one in order to further enhance their literacy skills. n There is a well-sequenced curriculum in place, which the childminder plans based on children's interests and what they need to learn next. The childminder

need to do better?
28 November 2024 shares typical milestones of development with parents and asks them to contribute to starting points. The form for parents to share this information on is clear, and this involves them in creating next steps in learning for their children. n The childminder sits with children while they eat their lunch and talks to them about what they are eating. She encourages even the youngest children to hold their own water bottle while they are drinking. Older children independently open their own food and pour their own water. The childminder promotes further independence by having accessible handwashing facilities and teaching children how to blow their own noses. n The childminder builds on children's experiences as she takes them into the wider community. She takes children on the bus, as children in this setting mostly travel by car. She also takes children to the local garden centre to initiate
