p.1

The provision is good

Children are very content in the childminder's caring and nurturing environment. The enjoyment and enthusiasm the childminder has for her role shines through. This is reflected in the levels of confidence children show. For example, young children assuredly approach visitors to the setting and invite them into their play. They talk about the jigsaw they are making and direct the visitor to where to place the pieces. This shows how safe and secure children feel in the childminder's care.

p.2

The provision is good

The childminder builds on what children already know and can do to plan a curriculum which takes into account their interests. For example, she knows children are fascinated by numbers and counting. She sits with young children as they stack wooden blocks, counting individual numbers as they build. This helps children to develop the skills and abilities they need for their future learning.

p.2

The provision is good

The childminder makes sure that children can independently access their favourite resources. Children creatively draw together the skills they have learned as they match animals to jigsaw pieces. They make up songs about the animals they are playing with and introduce musical instruments to extend this play.

p.2

The provision is good

Children behave very well. They know to say please and thank you and are happy to share resources. Children respond to adults saying 'thank you' with 'you're welcome'.

n The childminder is a good communicator. She knows to give children time to respond to what has been said. The childminder helps to extend children's vocabulary as she introduces new words into their play. She gives simple explanations to ensure children understand what she has said. For example, childminder talks about 'carefully stacking the blocks on top of each other to help them balance, and not fall down'. n The childminder is very supportive of children and families who speak English as an additional language. She works very closely with parents to build herself a vocabulary of words in children's home language. The childminder uses technology to further support her ability to communicate with children. n The childminder knows to encourage children to return to activities they have spent very little time at. She recognises that, by adding extra resources into children's play, children spend a greater amount of time at activities. This helps

to develop children's concentration skills and their motivation to learn. n Parents are very pleased with the service the childminder provides. They comment on how eager their children are to go to the childminder's home. Parents particularly praise the dedication the childminder has to her role and the

27 November 2024 length of time she takes to understand children's unique needs and personalities. Parents remark on how much they rely on the childminder to allow them to work. n The childminder meets with other childminders and gives children opportunities to mix with a variety of different adults and children. This helps to develop children's self-esteem and confidence as they build relationships with people outside of their immediate environment. n Children have many chances to experience the local community and further afield. This further extends their curiosity and enthusiam for learning. n The childminder ensures that all necessary qualifications, for example her paediatric first-aid training, are up to date. She accesses a wide range of safeguarding training to make sure that children are kept safe in her environment. The childminder regularly reflects on her practice. She recognises that maintaining a programme of ongoing professional development will further

develop her skills and help to raise outcomes for children. n In her eagerness for children to learn the childminder often tells children what to do next. As such, this does not always allow children to develop their thinking skills and find things out for themselves. n The childminder does not always ensure children wash their hands before eating. This means the development of children's self-care skills and learning how to keep themselves healthy are not fully supported.
