Inspection of Canal House Out of School Club St. Annes C Of E School, 170 Wigan Lower Road, Standish Lower Ground, Wigan WN6 8JP

p.1

This provision meets requirements

Children are warmly greeted by the caring staff when they arrive at this well- organised and friendly after-school club. Staff have high expectations for children's behaviour, which all children clearly understand. Children behave very well and promptly respond to staff instructions, for example, when it is time to sit down together for their meal or to tidy away the toys. Children play cooperatively to build a marble run, kindly sharing equipment and discussing the best way to slot the pipes together. They are patient and take time to listen to each other's ideas. This demonstrates how the children are encouraged to be respectful and polite.

This provision meets requirements

There are lots of interesting activities on offer at the club. Staff know the children very well and ensure that there are exciting opportunities for all children to be involved. Children relax on cushions in a quieter area, cuddle up to the club's giant teddy bear and enjoy selecting from a thoughtfully chosen selection of books. Children take great care and concentrate hard as they decorate baubles with paint and glitter. They hold them up proudly. Staff are full of admiration and praise for their efforts. This supports children to be confident and to take a pride in their achievements.

n Children and staff display highly positive relationships. Staff speak about how they enjoy spending time with the children and how proud of all the children's achievements they are. All children, including children with special educational needs and/or disabilities, are supported to take part in activities confidently. For example, when playing a board game, staff sensitively encourage children to carry on trying by giving them a special role. This supports children's emotional security and builds their resilience. n The club is full of laughter and interesting conversations. Children of all ages sit at tables in social groups and enjoy a meal together. They chatter about what they have done at school and about activities that they are looking forward to at home. They politely wait their turn for food and say thank you without being reminded. Children wait until others have finished before they leave the table.

p.2

need to do better?

This reflects the respectful atmosphere of the club. n Children are well supported to make healthy choices. They help themselves to fruit as a snack and in the summer grow a range of vegetables, including tomatoes and onions in the school allotment. Children explain that when they are thirsty they need to have a drink of water 'so you don't get dehydrated and get a headache'. Children get plenty of exercise, using hula hoops energetically and throwing balls to knock down giant skittles. n Children are very well supported to grow in confidence and to value their own

4 December 2024 achievements. They speak with pride about their ideas and illustrations being published in a book about pets. They say that they were 'so shocked and proud' when they were able to see their work in the book and excitedly turn the pages of the book to show others the pictures they drew. n Staff speak very positively about leaders and the wider team. They meet regularly with leaders to discuss their professional development and any training needs. Staff are highly reflective about the club and frequently discuss ideas for new activities or improvements which could be made. This means that practice is constantly improving and developing. n Parents are full of praise for the care their children receive at the club. They say that staff are 'amazing, just fantastic'. They say that their children are always keen to attend and that they are settled and happy at pick up time. Parents say that they are well informed about their child's time at the club and that they
