Children live and stay in a warm and welcoming home that is decorated and finished to a high standard. The home has plenty of room, so that children can spend time together or apart. The space has been effectively utilised for children’s interests such as an arts and crafts room, a games room and a pool table.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: outstanding

Staff support children to attend medical appointments routinely and when there are health concerns. Staff have worked closely with specialist professionals to ensure that children receive and benefit from the best possible help. Furthermore, staff can access consultations with therapeutic workers to support them to work therapeutically with children. As a result, children are more equipped to manage socially and emotionally.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: outstanding

Staff communicate effectively with education professionals to ensure that the child living in the home receives the right level of support. For children who access short breaks, although education remains primarily the responsibility of the local authority and parents, staff have a positive impact on children engaging with education. This includes supporting some children to achieve recognised qualifications in areas of interest. As a result, children are invested in their education and have aspirations for their future.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: outstanding

The registered manager and staff appreciate the significance of children’s relationships with family and friends. They are skilled in building relationships with children’s family. One child’s parent said, ‘I felt like they [staff] were looking after me too.’ When planning short breaks, staff consider who children have built up a good relationship with, so that they can enjoy their short break stay and make and sustain friendship groups.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: outstanding

The home has recently changed its conditions of registration in order to respond to service needs. As a result, short breaks have not taken place for a period of time. However, over the summer months, staff supported children to enjoy adventure-based activities such as paddleboarding, kayaking, axe throwing and archery. These experiences ensure that children have fun and help to develop their confidence and self- esteem.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: outstanding

Children are made aware of the complaints procedure and know how to make a com- plaint, although none have been made since the last inspection. The child currently living in the home sees the registered manager daily and is confident that any concerns would be appropriately addressed.

p.4

Behaviour management strategies in place are effective and well understood. Staff understand subtle changes in children’s behaviours and can predict certain behaviours and prevent incidents from escalating. As a result, physical intervention is used rarely and only as a last resort in order to keep children safe. De-briefs with children are detailed and support children to reflect and consider if anything could be done differently to help them.

p.4

How well children and young people are helped and protected: outstanding

There has been a small number of incidents of children going missing. When this has occurred, staff are proactive in contacting parents and associates and physically looking for children. Return home interviews take place and staff ensure that they have this information, so that they can update relevant plans. The registered manager has challenged professionals when they have been dis-satisfied with their response.

p.4

Staff have access to a wide range of resources to support them in their interventions. This means that children are meaningfully engaged in education around areas of concern.
