p.1

The provision requires improvement

The childminder is welcoming and children enjoy their time at the setting and have fun. However, the childminder does not implement a curriculum that supports children's learning in all areas of the early years foundation stage. The learning programme provided is variable, particularly in the areas of communication and language development, and physical development for the youngest children. This means that children's progress in these areas is not as good as it could be.

p.2

The provision requires improvement

Overall, the childminder is a positive role model. Children settle in and build relationships with each other. However, the childminder does not consistently plan stimulating activities and resources. There are times throughout the day when children disengage from learning and wander around, moving from activity to activity. The childminder is respectful and explains to children about expectations for their behaviour and conduct. She involves them in simple interactions about how they are feeling and what they like to do. Children learn to share and take turns with each other. However, due to the variable learning programme, some children are not always able to fully engage, concentrate and be curious.

p.2

The provision requires improvement

The childminder prepares nutritious meals for the children. She ensures she has accurate information about children's dietary needs. She offers fresh fruit at each mealtime. This promotes a healthy lifestyle.

p.2

need to do better?

n The inspection was conducted following an event that occurred at the setting, with regards to ratios. The childminder explained that at times she has not maintained the required ratios which is a requirement. The childminder has addressed this and recognises the importance of maintaining ratios. n Personal care routines are in place. There is a clean changing mat for younger children to have their nappies changed. However, at times, children are not effectively supported to manage their own personal care routines. For example, children do not wash their hands after using the potty. This means that children are not always taught the link between good health and good hygiene practices. n The childminder provides a variable physical development learning programme. She skilfully supports older children's physical skills. She encourages them to climb steps carefully. They use their small muscles as they sculpt play dough.

p.2

need to do better?

However, she does not develop the youngest children's large muscle skills well. The childminder aids them by putting her hand out and walking with them. She does not always organise the environment well for young children to support their large muscle skills that they need to boost their physical skills. n The childminder does not have a good overall understanding of how to develop children's communication and language skills well. For example, at times,

need to do better?

24 September 2024 children's ideas and thinking are not always sought by the childminder in order to further extend their speaking skills. However, at other times, she shares and reads stories with children. She encourages the them to answer simple questions and point to pictures in books. This supports children's emerging literacy skills well. n Children enjoy their time at the setting but they do not always show sustained engagement in activities. For example at times children do not settle and concentrate on the activities on offer. This demonstrates that the childminder is not always planning effectively to build on children's learning well. n The childminder completes mandatory training, such as paediatric first aid and safeguarding training. However, she does not identify training opportunities to build her knowledge of how children learn well across age groups. She is not able to support all children to develop to their full potential. This has an impact

on children's learning outcomes. n The childminder takes children out into the local community. They visit local toddler groups approximately three times a week. This helps them to socialise with a wider group of children. n The childminder supports parents to extend their children's development at home. She observes signs of readiness and then supports children to toilet train. n The childminder shares information about children's daily activities with parents at drop off and collection times. Parents feel comfortable to speak to the childminder if they have any concerns about their child's development. These regular communications between the childminder and families supports partnership with parents.
