p.1

The provision requires improvement

Although children are happy and generally well occupied, adults do not extend their learning and development to a consistently good level. Teaching is sometimes variable and interactions with children are not always considered well enough. Nevertheless, the childminder knows individual children well and the support they need. During planned activities, the childminder includes mathematical concepts into children's play to support this. She demonstrates an understanding of the learning intentions for planned activities. Children enjoy story times; they laugh and join in as stories are brought to life with actions and puppets.

The provision requires improvement

Children have formed good bonds with the childminder. They are content and relaxed in the childminder's welcoming home. Children's behaviour is good. The childminder and her assistants generally have clear expectations for children's behaviour and conduct. For example, children are encouraged to help tidy up. This promotes positive behaviour, supports their social development and helps establish clear boundaries. The childminder shows a positive and caring attitude towards the children, helping them feel safe and secure. She recognises and responds to their care needs, for example, when they are getting hungry or tired.

need to do better?

n The childminder has made some improvements to her practice since the last inspection. She has effective routines in place that allow children time to consolidate and deepen their knowledge through play. Children are given time to explore their interests, such as the routine of putting a baby to bed or exploring resources. However, the quality of teaching is not at a consistently good level. Although, children generally make some progress in their learning and development, their learning is incidental because the childminder does not make the most of her curriculum to plan and sequence learning precisely to ensure that it is ambitious for all children. n Parents are happy with the care their children receive. The childminder works in partnership with parents to keep them up to date with what children have been doing at the setting. She sends them daily photos, which show what activities children have enjoyed. The childminder gathers key information about children

before they start. This includes a basic overview of what children already know and can do. Parents comment that the childminder is professional and that their children love coming to visit her. n The childminder's risk assessment procedure ensures that hazards inside the property are minimised. This demonstrates that the childminder understands, and is capable of, effective risk assessment. However, this has not been extended to the outside space effectively to ensure that this is well prepared for children to fully support their well-being. Despite this, the childminder monitors

The childminder provides children with well-balanced and nutritious platters and water throughout the day. She supports children to try the food and develop their self-help skills as they are encouraged to use their forks to feed themselves. Children understand the importance of following good hygiene routines. They readily wash their hands before eating and after using the toilet or potty. The childminder supervises the children well to ensure that they are kept safe. She gives children gentle reminders about the importance of not putting too much food in their mouths to ensure that they do not choke. n The childminder and the assistants that she works with keep their safeguarding training up to date. The childminder supports her assistants well and together they attend training to ensure that children's health is maintained. The
