p.1

The provision is good

Children benefit from a wonderfully stimulating learning environment, both indoors and outside. The dedicated childminder has carefully selected a wide range of high- quality resources to promote children's curiosity and support them to become confident and inquisitive learners. The youngest children select their own jugs and containers as they engage in water play. Older children confidently snip the herbs growing in the garden to create their own 'soup' in the mud kitchen. They concentrate as they use glue and glitter to decorate their magic wands. They become thoroughly absorbed as they connect together magnetic shapes. Throughout all of these activities, the childminder skilfully uses questions to help develop and extend children's skills and understanding. This supports children to make good progress in all areas of learning.

The provision is good

Children's behaviour is exemplary. They play alongside each other in an atmosphere that is calm and purposeful. Children beam with pride when they receive praise and encouragement. The childminder gently reminds children about taking turns to use the resources. There are opportunities for children to develop their confidence with larger groups of children as they regularly attend different groups and activities in the local community. They also learn about the world around them from visits to places of interest, such as the beach, the farm, and museums. The childminder uses children's own experiences to help them learn about similarities and differences between themselves and others.

n The childminder has an excellent knowledge and understanding of how young children learn. She is very clear about the importance of providing children with learning opportunities matched to their age and stage of development. She uses children's interests to engage and motivate them to try new things or to practise something they may be struggling with. This helps to equip children with the knowledge and skills they need for their next stage in learning. n Children demonstrate that they have a real love of reading. They proudly share with the inspector books they have recently borrowed from the library. They enjoy sitting with the childminder as she reads to them. Her questions encourage children to predict what might happen next. The childminder uses books and stories to promote children's mathematical vocabulary, as they identify different shapes, count, and compare sizes. n There is a strong focus on children's communication and language development.

They learn about road safety when out and about. She teaches children how to negotiate steps safely in the garden. n Children have plenty of opportunities to develop their self-care skills, such as washing their hands and putting on their shoes. They help to prepare their own snack as the childminder supports the older children to use knives to cut their own fruit. Children wait patiently until it is their turn, but are not able to watch

and learn from their friends. n The childminder works extremely hard to ensure she provides children with the best possible start to their early education. She reflects on her practice constantly, making sure that the learning environment reflects children's interests and needs. She accesses a wealth of different training and uses this effectively to enhance children's learning. n Parents speak extremely highly of the childminder. They explain how she supports their children to settle in, for example, by setting up activities based around their favourite stories. Parents also welcome how they can work together with the childminder so that routines are consistent. They value her expertise when it comes to potty training or providing advice on supporting their children's learning at home.
