Progress monitoring inspection boarding report

p.1

Al Jamiah Al Islamiyyah Willows Lane, Bolton, Lancashire BL3 4HF

p.1

Inspected under the social care common inspection framework

p.1

Context of the inspection

This was a monitoring inspection of the residential provision. This unannounced visit was carried out to check on the progress in meeting unmet national minimum standards, which were identified at the previous Ofsted inspection on 20 September 2023.

p.1

Summary of the progress made in implementing the action plan

Leaders have taken their responsibility to monitor the boarding provision seriously. They now carry out regular checks to ensure that boarders have suitable and comfortable living conditions. Leaders have repaired all showers, replaced carpets and painted throughout. Leaders have better considered fire risks, and fire doors are now accessible so that children and staff can leave quickly if needed.

p.1

Summary of the progress made in implementing the action plan

Leaders have improved the health, safety and cleanliness of the kitchen and boarding areas. There are more rigorous monitoring and better cleaning systems in place. This means that these areas are now much safer and cleaner.

p.1

Summary of the progress made in implementing the action plan

There is a new designated safeguarding lead who is supported by two deputies. He is proactive and enthusiastic in his actions to protect children. The designated safeguarding lead and deputies have updated their skills and knowledge. They have completed designated safeguarding lead refresher training, and safer recruitment training, along with providing training to leaders and school staff. In addition, the designated safeguarding lead is part of the local authority safeguarding forum, which is held quarterly. He is familiar with relevant statutory guidance. These measures have increased the safeguarding knowledge base of leaders in the school.

p.1

Summary of the progress made in implementing the action plan

Arrangements to safeguard and promote the welfare of boarders are effective and in line with the school’s safeguarding policy. Appropriate safeguarding checks are made on the staff who work in the boarding provision. Staff also receive regular safeguarding training. Inspection Report Al Jamiah Al Islamiyyah, 25/09/2024 Page 2 of 5 Leaders have a system in place to oversee medication, and its storage is well organised.

p.1

Summary of the progress made in implementing the action plan

At previous inspections, the school’s trustees were not monitoring the boarding provision effectively. The senior leadership team has now expanded, with the positive appointment of a new governing body. Quality assurance processes are far more prevalent and suggest sustainability of good practice. Leaders have a better understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of the boarding provision, with plans in place to address identified shortfalls.

p.2

Summary of the progress made in implementing the action plan

Children have access to two phones in the boarding accommodation; however, only one of these phones is working. This severely limits children’s opportunities to call home and have contact with their families and potentially reduces their time on the phone.

p.2

schools:

 The school’s leadership and management fulfil their responsibilities consistently and effectively so that the standards are met. (Boarding schools: national minimum standards 2.4)  Schools facilitate arrangements so boarders can contact their parents/carers and families in private, at a time that is suitable for both parties, considering relevant time zones for international pupils. Schools should operate proportionate systems to monitor and control the use of electronic communications in order to detect abuse, bullying or unsafe practice by boarders. Schools are sensitive and comply with individual children’s circumstances such as restricted contact with families.
