p.1

The provision is good

The childminder is experienced and understands how children learn. She undertakes observations of children as they play to assess their development. She thoughtfully plans experiences, ensuring that these link to children's interests and stages of development. These inspire children's curiosity and engage them well. They concentrate and test out their ideas as they explore sensory materials. The childminder encourages the younger children to discuss the different textures and offers them ideas to extend their exploration, such as using funnels to pour sand. The childminder links this to their previous focus on pirates. Older children make up intricate imaginative stories, confidently discussing these as they bury little toy jewels in the sand.

The provision is good

The childminder attentively supports children's care needs so that they are comfortable and happy in her home. They build strong relationships with her. She is friendly and caring, and they enjoy her company. She models new words appropriately as children practise their speech. She listens to children, and they enjoy chatting with her. Children begin to appreciate the needs of others through the childminder's patient explanations. They listen respectfully to her, start to manage their emotions, share resources and enjoy being with the other children. The childminder extends this further, planning useful activities. Children listen well and take turns to find the correct animal for each page of a story. Younger children learn to take turns, and the older children learn to be patient with the younger ones, giving them time to find what they need.

n The childminder is keen to continue to develop her provision. She thinks about what she provides for children, gaining the views of parents and linking to children's changing interests. She undertakes online research and has links with other local childminders to help her gain new ideas and keep up to date with changes to guidance. n The childminder has good relationships with parents. She shares information regarding children's achievements and next steps in their learning. She collaborates closely with them to ensure that there is a consistent approach to the support children receive and that gaps in their learning close. Parents are very complimentary about the childminder, saying that she clearly loves her job, puts lots of effort and time into everything that she does and genuinely cares for the children. n The childminder sets out her lounge with resources to interest the children. She joins children to extend their exploration and learning. They discuss animals and

15 October 2024 childminder does not always follow children's current fascinations and extend their learning to higher levels. n Children of all ages develop their mathematics skills effectively. They explore sensory materials and quantity and capacity, filling containers and using suitable mathematics terms. They have fun as the childminder joins them in their imaginative play with the sweet shop and pizza cart. She encourages the children to count, discuss and use play money relevant to their ages and abilities, challenging them well. n The childminder offers children age-appropriate, gradual steps threaded into the routines of the day to develop their self-care skills and confidence in their own abilities. She encourages them to do things for themselves, such as chopping fruit for their snack and pouring their water. At times, the children get many items out and their play areas get full of toys. Although the childminder tries to

encourage them to tidy up, she does not persevere and does not encourage their sense of responsibility as much as possible. n The childminder offers children lots of experiences out in their local and wider communities, helping build their confidence in new situations. She takes them to farm parks to develop their understanding of the natural world. They visit play parks to build children's strength and coordination on the varied equipment and she teaches children to understand risks and be mindful of boundaries for their safety. They attend story time at the local library. They also attend play-based groups, enabling them to meet with children of a similar age and develop their social skills.
