Enterkey Training Ltd Report following a monitoring visit to a ‘requires improvement’ provider

p.1

Name of lead inspector: Rachel Clark, His Majesty’s Inspector

p.1

Inspection dates: 24 and 25 September 2024

p.1

Type of provider: Independent learning provider

p.1

Address:

337-339 Coventry Road Small Heath Birmingham B10 0SN Monitoring visit: Enterkey Training Ltd, 24 and 25 September 2024

p.1

Context and focus of visit

Enterkey Training Ltd (Enterkey) was inspected in July 2023. At that time, inspectors judged the overall effectiveness of the provision to require improvement.

p.2

Context and focus of visit

The focus of this monitoring visit was to evaluate the progress that leaders and managers have made in resolving the main areas for improvement identified at the previous inspection.

p.2

Context and focus of visit

Enterkey is a private training provider based in Birmingham, West Midlands, with a training site in West Bromwich. Enterkey offers training courses to adult learners that are funded by the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA). At the time of the inspection, there were 56 learners enrolled on courses at level 1 and below. Of these, 31 learners were studying functional skills English and mathematics qualifications, and 25 learners were studying English for speakers of other languages (ESOL) qualifications. In addition, almost half of these learners were also studying a level 1 qualification in customer service. The provider does not work with any subcontractors.

p.2

Reasonable progress

Since the previous inspection, leaders have re-designed their curriculums to include regular opportunities for learners to learn about potential future employment and training. At the start of the course, teachers capture information about what jobs learners have done previously, what knowledge and skills they already have, and whether they have a suitable CV for job applications. Teachers use this information to help inform planning for learners’ next steps. Learners receive regular talks from sector specialists on career roles, such as nursing, the civil service, and security. From the onset, learners are clear that the aim of the course is to help them to move on to further learning or employment.

p.2

Reasonable progress

Leaders have strengthened their partnership working with employers and education providers in the local community. They use these links to keep up to date with employment and education opportunities in the local areas. Teachers regularly share this information with learners to help them to make choices about their next steps, once they complete their studies. Monitoring visit: Enterkey Training Ltd, 24 and 25 September 2024 Leaders’ actions have significantly increased the number of learners who successfully move on to employment or further training compared to the previous year. However, they rightly recognise this is still too low. Leaders have put further measures in place to continue to improve the proportion of learners who move on to employment and training. At the time of the monitoring visit, it was too early to see the full impact.

p.2

Reasonable progress

Following the previous inspection, leaders made a strategic decision to change their teaching model and to no longer use subcontractors. This has given leaders direct oversight of the quality of education learners receive so that they can implement changes and improvements more swiftly.

p.3

Reasonable progress

Leaders have increased the frequency and rigour of their quality monitoring activities. They use these activities to frequently check the quality of education and to communicate to staff their expectations for teaching standards. Teachers receive regular feedback and developmental action plans to help them to improve their teaching.

p.3

Reasonable progress

Leaders use the information they gather from their quality assurance activities to support their performance management of staff, plan training, and to inform the curriculum. As a result of this monitoring, leaders have identified and implemented improvements to areas, such as curriculum design, and the teaching of personal development topics, such as fundamental British values. However, initiatives to improve the quality of marking and feedback to help learners improve their work overtime have not yet been fully effective.

p.3

Reasonable progress

Teachers benefit from frequent and useful professional development activities. They receive training on safeguarding topics, such as domestic violence, the ‘Prevent’ duty, fundamental British values, and careers guidance. As result, inclusivity and the importance of democratic processes are key learning themes throughout the taught curriculums. Learners deepen their understanding of what it means to live in modern Britain. However, teachers do not routinely benefit from professional development relating to their teaching skills. Monitoring visit: Enterkey Training Ltd, 24 and 25 September 2024

p.3

Reasonable progress

Leaders have re-designed their curriculums to include regular careers education, information, advice and guidance. This includes learners exploring careers and further study options, developing skills for employment and job applications, and having regular exposure to local employers to learn about career pathways. Learners receive help from teachers to apply for higher-level courses or employment. Learners are clear on the employment roles and training available to them once they have completed their course.

p.4

Reasonable progress

Through their partnership working, leaders host and promote regular careers talks and jobs fairs that learners attend. Key local employers, from sectors where opportunities for employment are high, support these events. As a result, learners are better aware of the range of job roles available to them. For example, learners who seek a non-teaching school role understand they could apply for jobs, such as a teaching assistant, administrator, or before- and after-school club organiser.

p.4

Reasonable progress

Teachers teach learners to write a CV and to complete job applications. Teachers highlight the common errors that unsuccessful job applicants make, and the actions learners need to take to ensure they do not make these mistakes. Learners, through the help they receive, are better prepared to apply for jobs and an increasing number of learners successfully gain employment.

p.4

Reasonable progress

In a few instances, learners do not receive tailored advice and guidance about the additional qualifications or training they need to increase their employment prospects. For example, learners with aspirations to work in construction are not made aware of the health and safety training employers require prior to employment. Monitoring visit: Enterkey Training Ltd, 24 and 25 September 2024 regulates and inspects to achieve excellence in the care of children and young people, and in education and skills for learners of all ages. It regulates and inspects childcare and children’s social care, and inspects the Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service (Cafcass), schools, colleges, initial teacher training, further education and skills, adult and community learning, and education and training in prisons and other secure establishments. It assesses council children’s services, and inspects services for children looked after, safeguarding
