Overall effectiveness Inadequate

p.1

The provision is inadequate

The childminder does not promote children's health and safety. For example, she places children in highchairs without the use of safety restraints or close supervision. This means children's safety cannot be assured. Furthermore, the childminder is yet to establish consistent daily routines which promote children's health and hygiene. Her own hygiene practices also require improvement and put children at risk of cross infection.

p.2

The provision is inadequate

Despite this, children are happy, and they form positive relationships with others. For example, children excitedly name some of the body parts that they can see in a book, such as the eyes, ears, and nose. They seek out others to share this experience with. Children develop their social skills as they take part in activities that link to familiar stories, such as a game where they take it in turns to post the food into the hungry caterpillar's mouth. The childminder knows children well. For instance, she recognises when they are becoming hungry and tired. This helps her to meet their needs, such as having a bottle of milk ready. She closely cuddles babies as she feeds them their milk, creating a sense of security.

p.2

need to do better?

n Children's safety cannot be assured because the childminder does not identify the risks that put children in danger of injury. For example, she places children in highchairs without the use of safety restraints and leaves them while she attends to the needs of other children. This puts children at risk of harm. n The childminder does not consistently promote children's good health and hygiene. For example, children are not provided with opportunities to wash their hands with soap and water before eating and after nappy changes. Furthermore, after blowing children's noses, the childminder does not wash her hands before proceeding to serve them their lunch. She discards the used tissue on the unit next to her instead of putting it in the bin. This puts children at risk of cross infection. n The childminder reminds children of her expectations when they forget. For example, she encourages them to tidy up their toys when they have finished

playing. However, she does not always encourage children to manage their own self-care skills, such as cleaning their own hands and face and blowing their own nose, she does this for them. This does not help children to understand the importance of care routines. n Children often use single words to communicate. For example, they say 'sun' when they notice the sun in the sky. The childminder repeats what children say, showing that she has understood. However, she does not always identify opportunities to further extend children's language, vocabulary and understanding.

p.2

need to do better?

17 September 2024 n The childminder organises the provision taking into consideration children's interests and next steps. For instance, there is a particular focus on improving children's concentration skills, turn taking and their ability to follow simple instructions. This means children have opportunities to practise these skills throughout the day. n The childminder helps children to become familiar with the local school that they will eventually go to. For instance, they attend sports days and coffee mornings. The headteacher of the school reports on how 'The childminder facilitates home visits to discuss children's learning.' However, effective partnerships are not yet in place between the childminder and the other settings that children attend. This does not promote continuity in their learning. n The childminder offers parents and carers guidance to promote sequenced learning at home. For example, she gives them ideas to strengthen children's

language skills so that they can better communicate their needs in preparation for potty training. Parents speak positively about the childminder and the care she provides. They know what skills their children need to learn next and are thankful for the support that they receive. n The childminder attends training to build on her knowledge and skills. For instance, she has recently attended a course which has helped her to sensitively talk to parents about any matters relating to their children's learning and development. n Although there are no children on roll with special educational needs and/or disabilities, the childminder recognises the importance of collaborating with external professionals to ensure children receive the support that they need. n The childminder meets children's individual dietary needs well. For example, she cuts up their food to an appropriate size for them to manage and encourages

those who need motivation to eat well. She finds out about children's allergies and has recently completed anaphylaxis training to gain a deeper understanding of her role in managing this condition.
