The provision is good
Children show that they feel happy and safe in the childminder's care. They are confident in the daily routine and enjoy the freedom to move between the indoor and outdoor space. This supports their growing independence. Children see positive images of themselves and people from around the world. Photos of themselves involved in activities are displayed for children to see and are also in their own scrapbooks. Children can look at these and share them with their parents. This encourages children to recall past events and talk about their experiences. This helps children feel a sense of belonging.

The provision is good
Children thoroughly enjoy being physically active. They confidently climb the steps of the slide. The childminder reminds them to take their time and to sit down carefully to make sure that they do not fall. This helps their coordination and builds their awareness of their own safety. Children carefully help the childminder to pour 'bubble liquid' into the bubble machine. They wait patiently for the childminder to turn the machine on. Children squeal with delight as bubbles start floating into the air. They chase the bubbles around the garden, trying to catch and pop them. The childminder encourages children to look at the different colours of the bubbles and talks to them about the rainbow of colours that they can see. This supports their growing colour recognition skills. Children are learning to take turns and to share the toys. The childminder talks to them about how they are feeling as they learn to

n The childminder builds partnerships with parents from the start. She gathers information from them about their child and their development and uses this to plan activities to support their learning. The childminder keeps parents up to date with their child's day and any new skills they are developing. She also shares ideas with parents about ways of continuing their child's learning at home. However, links with other settings children attend have not yet been established. n The childminder encourages children's use of language. She uses lots of repetition of words and speaks slowly and clearly to children so that they hear words correctly. Children identify different people when they play with the small- world figures, such as 'mummy' and 'the baby'. Children join in as the childminder says, 'Ready, steady, go' before they go down the slide, and they tell the childminder when they are not ready. They enjoy singing songs about

This supports their social and emotional development. n The childminder supports children to follow good hygiene routines. Children learn the importance of washing their hands before eating and after using the toilet. The childminder talks to children about foods that are good for their bodies. Fresh drinking water is available throughout the day. Personal care routines are followed by the childminder. Children rest and sleep as they need to during the day. n The childminder works closely with the local authority to keep up to date with any changes in legislation and practice. She maintains her knowledge of issues, such as safeguarding children, hygiene practices, paediatric first aid and safer sleeping routines, through training opportunities and reading literature. This

enables the childminder to adapt her practice accordingly as needed. n The childminder actively seeks the views of parents using her service. She sends out questionnaires for them to complete and asks them for their written comments. Parents speak very positively about the care they and their children receive. They comment that the childminder gets to know their children quickly and creates a safe space for them. Parents say that she is very diligent with communication and keeps them abreast of any developments throughout the day.
