p.1

The provision is good

The childminder creates an environment where children are happy and safe. Children go to the childminder when they need reassurance and comfort. They are confident and ask the childminder for help when needed. Children establish strong bonds with the childminder.

p.2

The provision is good

The childminder uses her curriculum to plan themes that support children to learn new concepts that are relevant and engaging. For example, when all her children are due to go on summer holidays with their families, she plans summer time activities. The childminder teaches children the names of sea creatures and talk about their key features. Children laugh and giggle during water play, repeating words such as 'splash' and 'wet'. All children remain engaged in their learning. Babies explore with their senses and older children use their newly learned vocabulary during their play. The curriculum is ambitious for all children.

p.2

The provision is good

Children show positive attitudes to their learning. Children practise threading buttons. When they struggle, they ask the childminder for support. The childminder encourages children to keep trying and praises their efforts. Children maintain high levels of concentration, even when they find activities more difficult. They are proud of their achievements.

need to do better?

n The childminder demonstrates a deep knowledge of children and their interests. She uses this information to plan learning opportunities that develop children's learning. For example, older children enjoy playing with animals and use open- ended resources to create enclosures. The childminder uses phrases such as 'climbing up the cage', and children demonstrate their understanding through their actions and repeating the words. n The childminder helps children to build their knowledge of early mathematics. Children compare the sizes of containers as they fill and empty them. Older children use a wide range of vocabulary. They talk about objects being 'too heavy' or 'light'. Children acquire early mathematical knowledge in preparation for later learning. n Children's develop their physical skills through a range of activities. They use a range of different balls for catching, kicking and throwing. Children enjoy aiming

darts onto a soft magnetic dart board. This helps children to strengthen their large muscles and improve their balance and coordination. n Generally, children develop their independence skills well. Children can recognise their own belongings and make free choices during their play. However, the childminder sometimes completes tasks for children. For example, at mealtimes, she does not encourage children to self-serve their food or pour their own water.

need to do better?

11 July 2024 This prevents children from further developing their self-help skills. n The childminder has good relationships with the parents of the children in her care. She keeps parents updated about what their children have been doing and their next steps in development. Parents say the childminder is 'nurturing and supportive'. Partnership with parents is a strength in this setting. n The childminder values her professional development. She completes mandatory training and sources additional training to deepen her understanding of child development. In addition, the childminder works with a network of other childminders to share best practice and plan activities for children at a local childminder's group. This helps the childminder to refresh her knowledge and understanding. n The childminder gives children gentle reminders about rules and boundaries. She is quick to respond to children's unwanted behaviour and tells them to use 'kind

should:

n enhance and plan routines to promote children's independence skills further, in particular during mealtimes n help children to gain a secure understanding of why they should behave well, such as by explaining fully the impact any unwanted behaviour has on other children.
