p.1

The provision is good

Children relate well to the childminder and show confidence while in her home. They settle quickly into their play alongside their peers. Children respond positively to the childminder's warm and nurturing manner as she engages in their play. Children form early friendships with each other and play cooperatively as a group. The childminder positively supports children's emotional well-being throughout the day. She has routines in place that support the children to understand her boundaries and expectations. The children listen to the childminder's simple instructions and show enthusiasm to help the younger ones. For example, the older children support the younger ones by opening their bags for them to access their comforters before sleep time.

The provision is good

The childminder demonstrates a good understanding of child development. She plans her curriculum effectively, ensuring it builds on what children know. The childminder aims for children to be confident to ask questions and to be independent and resilient learners before they move on to the next stage in their educational journey. Children show enthusiasm to learn and to put these skills into practice. For example, while on a walk to the local field, children discuss road safety and repeat, 'Creep and peep, look left, look right', before crossing the road. Children lead their play well and move around the setting with confidence indoors and outdoors.

need to do better?

n The childminder knows the children well and is aware of their interests. She knows what the children can do, what she wants them to learn and how she will do this. The childminder gathers useful information from parents and/or carers when children start with her. She observes children's play and skilfully interacts with them to build on their knowledge and skills. However, the childminder does not always consider the development of the youngest children when planning some of her group activities. At times, she does not always provide the support the younger children need to enable them to access, focus and persevere in planned activities. n Children's communication and language are promoted well. For example, younger children are vocal and respond to the childminder's warm interactions. The older children confidently engage in back-and-forth discussions with the childminder. During activities, the childminder introduces new language. For

example, she discusses oral health, and the older children learn new words, such as 'plaque' and 'uvula'. As a result, children begin to broaden their vocabulary. n The childminder keeps her knowledge up to date through mandatory training and by networking with a local group of childminders. She identifies areas of her practice she would like to enhance further, taking the time to seek out training.

need to do better?

31 July 2024 For example, she researches and seeks ideas to help improve children's personal and social development. n Children learn and develop their independence skills well in preparation for future learning before eventually moving on to school. From a young age, children have opportunities to do things for themselves, such as finding their shoes and doing up the straps. Children develop an awareness of hygiene routines from an early age. For example, they learn to wash their hands when coming in from outside and before mealtimes. The childminder provides a wide range of healthy meals and snacks. n The childminder has high expectations of children's behaviour. Children are attentive, kind and play together well. When they have disputes, the childminder encourages the children to resolve them together. Children begin to understand the concept of sharing resources and waiting to have their turn. With the

childminder's gentle support and guidance, children learn about their own and each other's emotions. Consequently, children understand that their views are valued, which helps build their self-worth. n The childminder seeks a range of information from parents before children attend, including about children's routines, interests and development at home. She uses this information to make initial plans for children's learning. In addition to verbal feedback at the end of the day, the childminder shares weekly photos and invites parents to share information about children's experiences and achievements at home. Parents' feedback is positive. They state that the childminder is 'amazing' and that she provides wide and enjoyable trips outside the home for the children.
