p.1

The provision is good

Children enter this home-from-home environment excited and ready to play. The warm and friendly childminder prioritises building strong relationships with the children and their families. She provides well-organised and stimulating activities through her holistic approach to teaching. Children show they feel safe and secure with the childminder and in the play environment. The childminder celebrates their achievements. Children from a young age begin to develop confidence and high self-esteem. The childminder praises and encourages children often. This motivates them to behave well and supports their positive attitudes to learning.

p.2

The provision is good

The childminder has clear intentions for children's learning. She has identified that physical skills are fundamental for children's future health and well-being. The childminder plans various activities that focus on strengthening children's muscles, particularly those needed for later writing skills. Children show deep concentration and perseverance as they carefully use pegs to hang coloured scarves on string, or squeeze the paint from the bottles ready for painting their 'mood board'. The childminder takes the children on local river walks and to explore local woods. The children enjoy treasure hunts and being in nature. This enables them to challenge their bodies physically and improve their core strength.

need to do better?

n Children spend a lot of time outside in the fresh air. They visit a range of woods, parks and attractions with the childminder. Children enjoy discovering nature as they hunt for different natural treasures and bugs. The childminder meets with other childminders and their children. This enables the children to form new friendships and try out their emerging social skills in preparation for nursery or school. n The childminder creates a language-rich environment. She talks to the children all the time. She narrates their play and exposes them to a wide range of vocabulary. For those children who are beginning to talk, she repeats words back to them. This supports pronunciation and expands children's knowledge. The childminder asks children questions. However, at times, she does not allow children time to answer and offers answer choices too quickly. Despite this, children make progress in their language development.

p.2

need to do better?

n The childminder uses her accurate assessments of children's learning to identify potential gaps in their development at an early stage. She uses her positive relationships with parents well. She holds sensitive discussions to jointly address emerging gaps in their child's development. Children progress well from their starting points in learning. n The childminder builds on what children know and can do and provides activities to meet their individual needs. Consequently, children demonstrate positive

For example, they persevere and concentrate in their play when whisking bubbles at the water play. n Children's early mathematical understanding is supported effectively. For instance, the childminder encourages children to count different objects and use a range of mathematical language. She asks the children which fish is bigger when looking at books. Children use their critical thinking skills as they test how much water different-sized pots hold. n Parent partnerships are strong. The childminder takes the time to provide parents with personal and detailed feedback about their child's learning and progress. She collaborates with parents by giving them a range of support and guidance. Parents describe the childminder as 'dedicated', 'nurturing' and 'professional'. They notice their children growing in confidence and becoming more independent. Parents state that their children love going to the

childminder. n The childminder reflects on her own practice. She is passionate about keeping her knowledge and skills up to date. She attends many training opportunities and thoroughly enjoys learning new information. The childminder chooses opportunities that are relevant to the children who attend the setting and implements new ideas to support their development. For example, she has adapted her practice to provide more open activities whereby children revisit many times to be secure in their learning.
