p.2

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

Since the last inspection, one child has moved out of the home and one child has moved in. Planning and preparation for the child moving into the home have been managed sensitively and at a pace suited to their specific needs. Children who leave the home do so with ongoing support from staff who are identified in the child’s life-links plan. This ensures that children can still access support from familiar adults, should they want it.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

Staff speak about children fondly. The child living in the home has developed positive relationships with staff. When the child seeks answers about issues affecting their life, staff respond with measured advice in line with the child’s needs, age and understanding, and use a calm, nurturing approach. This enables the child to develop trust in the staff who look after them.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

Children are supported to develop a positive sense of themselves, which helps them to build emotional resilience and a sense of their own identity. Children are encouraged to develop independence, according to their individual needs. The child keeps their own list of independence tasks that they have completed. When asked about the progress they feel they have made with their independence, the child said, ‘100%.’

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

Children take part in a range of activities which help them keep physically fit and promote their social and emotional well-being. Activities include going to musicals, boxing, going to the gym, going on walks, trips to the beach and having their nails done, as well as going out for meals and to dessert shops. Children and staff celebrate various festivities together by having meals and celebrations. This provides children with enriching experiences which they can learn from.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

Education is promoted and encouraged. When plans for children are delayed or are not conducive to the child’s needs, the manager advocates for the child to ensure more suitable arrangements can be implemented. The child has started thinking about what career they may want to pursue in the future and this is encouraged by the staff, with arrangements being made to visit further education providers.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

Children are supported to register with healthcare services, including the GP, dentist and opticians. When children prefer not to attend appointments, staff make some attempts to explore the reasons why, but further encouragement and support are not consistent.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

When staff are aware that the child is smoking and using e-cigarettes, they do not make enough attempts to encourage the child to access smoking cessation services. Key- worker sessions have been delivered on this topic but could be more frequent and more detailed. Inspection report for children’s home: SC456543 4

p.3

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

There is a collaborative approach with partner agencies to reduce risks for children. When children are at risk of harm, staff respond effectively by taking necessary action.

p.4

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Risk management plans are in place which support staff to take a consistent approach to safety and care. Incidents of concern have management oversight and critical analysis. When additional debriefs are necessary, leaders and managers arrange these with staff to understand incidents in more depth.

p.4

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Since the last inspection, there have been no incidents that have required a child to be physically held, and positive behaviour is consistently promoted. When there have been incidents which require staff to intervene to de-escalate a situation, this has been achieved safely.

p.4

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

There has been one missing-from-home episode since the child moved in. This is a reduction from previously and a positive response to living in this home. The child’s social worker said, ‘This is significant.’

p.4

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

When the child has used discriminatory and derogatory language towards staff, this has been appropriately challenged. The child has been given time to reflect on these occasions and to consider the impact their behaviour has on others. This enables the child to understand appropriate boundaries, as well as learning to treat others with respect.

p.4

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Children know how to make a complaint, although no formal complaints have been raised. Staff seek to understand children’s grumbles and the manager follows them up with the child to gain a full understanding about what it is the child may feel unhappy about. This enables the child to feel listened to.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

The manager has effective oversight of practice and uses monitoring systems to review the standard and quality of children’s care. This ensures she has a clear understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of the home and the care being provided.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

The staff team is stable. Staff say that they communicate well with one another and they are a strong team. When discussing the manager, one staff member said, ‘She is visible and always available whenever we need her.’

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

Regular supervision takes place. Staff feel supported by managers and say they do not have to wait for supervision if they have any concerns. In addition, the manager provides additional debriefs to staff following incidents of concern. This enables the manager to have a full understanding of incidents that have taken place and what additional support the staff member may require. Inspection report for children’s home: SC456543 5 The staff have access to training, including recently attending safeguarding training hosted by the local authority. The manager has identified that specific training in relation to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder will enhance staff’s understanding of children who have this condition.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

The manager has a strong focus on improving the outcomes for children and she is steadfast in challenging external professionals when their responses are not effective. She has recently acted as the child’s appropriate adult and keeps the child updated with information and advice on issues affecting them.

p.5

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

The manager has acted on knowledge of the local community and has liaised with community agencies effectively to update the review of the premises. This ensures information contained in the review reflects known local risks and how these risks can be mitigated to ensure children’s safety and well-being. Inspection report for children’s home: SC456543 6
