p.1
Inspected under the social care common inspection framework
p.1
Information about this children’s home
This home is owned by a private company. It provides care for two children who have experienced social and emotional difficulties.
p.1
Information about this children’s home
The manager is suitably experienced and has been registered with Ofsted since 15 February 2024.
p.1
This monitoring visit
This children’s home was judged inadequate at the full inspection on 14 May 2024. Serious failures were identified, meaning children were not protected, their care and experiences were poor and they were not making progress. This visit was carried out to monitor managers’ and staff’s progress in addressing the shortfalls which were identified at the last inspection.
p.1
This monitoring visit
There is currently one child living at the home. She said the manager and staff look after her well and she has positive relationships with them, and she feels safe living at the home. No children have moved into or from the home since the last inspection.
p.1
This monitoring visit
There have been some improvements in the care staff are giving to the child. For example, more nutritious and healthy meals have been added to the menu. Staff have also requested follow-up health appointments so that the child’s health needs can be met. However, staff are not supporting the child consistently to get into a good daily routine, which would support her engagement in learning.
p.1
This monitoring visit
Staff and managers have revisited the child’s missing-from-care protocol. They now take action to locate the child when she goes missing from home and return her safely home. When the child went missing from home, staff spoke with her on her return about why she went missing and what happened while she was away. Inspection report for children's home - monitoring visit: 2754135 2 However, the manager was unaware that a child should be offered the opportunity to talk to someone independent of the home when they return. This lack of knowledge means that there are missed opportunities to gather information to try and prevent similar incidents from happening again.
p.1
This monitoring visit
Managers have reviewed staff recruitment and records are now compliant with regulation. Safer recruitment processes help to ensure that the child is cared for by suitable adults. In addition, the review of the safety of the location of the home includes information about all known local risks and control measures to safeguard the child.
p.2
This monitoring visit
A new on-call system means that staff can speak with a manager in the evenings and weekends when they need advice to support the child. In addition, managers have revisited how they monitor and review how medication is stored and administered to children. This will enable them to identify and act on any shortfalls in staff’s practice.
p.2
This monitoring visit
When significant incidents occur, managers now notify Ofsted. They have also shared the home’s most up-to-date statement of purpose with the regulator. As a result, Ofsted is suitably informed about the approach to care and what is happening at the home.
p.2
This monitoring visit
Staff who have not achieved the relevant qualification in residential childcare within timescales are now enrolled on a training course. Over time, this will support staff to better understand their roles and responsibilities in caring for children.
