Inspection report for children's home - monitoring visit: 2541440 1 Registered provider: Berry Gifford Limited
p.1
Inspected under the social care common inspection framework
p.1
Information about this children's home
This home is operated by a private company. It is registered to provide care for three children who have experienced childhood instability, which has led to trauma and associated complex behaviours.
p.1
Information about this children's home
The home has been without a registered manager since December 2022. A new manager started in October 2023. They have submitted an application to register with Ofsted.
p.1
This monitoring visit
A full inspection on 30 April and 1 May 2024 resulted in the home being judged as inadequate. Following that inspection, Ofsted served a compliance notice in respect of the leadership and management of the home and a restriction of accommodation notice. This monitoring visit was undertaken to monitor the provider’s progress in addressing the steps set out in the compliance notices.
p.1
This monitoring visit
Managers have undertaken a review of incidents that took place when a previous child was living at the home. This has included a significant amount of reflection with the staff team to consider lessons which could be learned from these incidents.
p.1
This monitoring visit
Additional measures have been put in place to minimise risks relating to incidents when children may go missing from home. Use of these additional measures is decided based on the level of risk which children are subject to, meaning they are only used when this is deemed necessary to keep children safe. There have not been any incidents since the full inspection, and the child living at the home has been settled and making progress. This does mean that the effectiveness of some of the measures put in place will need to be further tested as and when incidents do occur. Inspection report for children's home - monitoring visit: 2541440 2 Additional training has been provided to staff. This includes training in relation to safeguarding, child exploitation and recording. Managers have used team meetings to discuss training that staff have undertaken. This has helped them test and assess learning that staff have gained and consider how they would use this in practice.
p.1
This monitoring visit
Managers have considered learning from the placement of a child who previously lived at the home. They have accepted that there were some shortfalls in the admissions process and strengthened this process to ensure that it is more robust in the future. This includes working with the social worker of the child currently living at the home to ensure they will be consulted about the placement of children in the future. Managers have also raised concerns with the local authority of the child who previously lived at the home about gaps in the information they had been provided with during the admissions process.
p.2
This monitoring visit
Improvements have been made to internal monitoring systems. The responsible individual has greater oversight of audits that have been undertaken, allowing them to have a better understanding of shortfalls and areas for development. Improvements have also been made to the home environment, meaning it is more suitable for children.
p.2
This monitoring visit
All the steps in the compliance notice have been met. The grounds for the restriction of accommodation notice are no longer met, so this has therefore been lifted. Inspection report for children's home - monitoring visit: 2541440 3
