p.1

The provision is inadequate

The childminder cares for more children than she is allowed to at any one time. This impacts on children's safety and welfare and also on their learning and development. The childminder does not risk assess her environment adequately, nor does she provide adequate supervision to assure children's safety. This is evident when the childminder is not able to supervise all the children in her care appropriately, resulting in accidents. In addition, the childminder's limited interactions with children mean that they spend lengths of time playing on their own, without receiving support from her to extend their knowledge and skills. This results in some children becoming disengaged and bored in their learning. This impacts on the progress children make in their development.

p.2

The provision is inadequate

Although children behave well while in the childminder's care, they receive very little support to help them to learn age-appropriate rules and boundaries. Nonetheless, children are happy and content. They form strong attachments to the childminder, and the bond between them is evident. This shows children feel settled when they are in her care.

p.2

need to do better?

n The childminder shows a lack of understanding of ratio requirements and regularly cares for more children than requirements allow. This compromises children's safety and welfare. This is illustrated during inspection when the childminder placed a child on a small trampoline and left them alone while she attended to the needs of other children, who required her attention. Although unharmed, the childminder's lack of supervision did not prevent the child from falling a short distance to the ground. The number of children the childminder cares for has a significant impact on her ability to give all children her full attention for any extended period of time. This lack of quality interaction between the childminder and children impacts on the progress children make in their communication and language development. This is particularly meaningful for any children for whom communication has been identified as being in need

of support. n The childminder does not use effective risk assessments to support her practice. She compromises children's safety because she is not always able to assess risks and supervise children properly. For example, at lunchtime, while the childminder is feeding younger children, she does not set her environment up well enough to enable her to see older children either serving their own food or eating. The childminder allows children to walk around her environment and play with resources while they eat food. This presents choking hazards to children. n The childminder's teaching is not effective in supporting children's development. She does not challenge children to further progress their learning. The

p.2

need to do better?

6 June 2024 childminder does not implement an effective curriculum to help children learn the skills they need to know and learn next. The childminder is happy for children to be engaged in play of their own choosing without her intervention. Children show this when they access a large tray of interesting resources where they spend time occupying themselves, for example, stacking cups. As the childminder is occupied attending other children's needs, she does not interact with children and demonstrate meaningful teaching to help children to make progress. n The childminder can discuss where children are in their development and the skills and abilities children need to acquire. However, her assessments are not sufficiently robust to ensure that children are meeting their developmental milestones or identify gaps in their learning. This impacts on children's development as they prepare to move forward to school and beyond.

p.2

need to do better?

n When the childminder had a discussion with another provider about the number of children she can care for and realised she cared for too many, she did not take immediate action to address this. After this was brought to her attention again during inspection, she accepted this information and showed a willingness to address this as soon as she could. n Despite weaknesses in practice, children show they are confident and capable. Most resources are within their reach and they predominately access what they need independently. This means children are able to continue the games they are playing and extend their concentration skills. Younger children are sufficiently confident to ask visitors to the childminder's home to help them find what it is they are looking for. n Children have as many visits as needed to enable them to settle into the childminder's environment.
