Four children have moved in and two children have moved out of the home since the last inspection. One child spoke to the inspector during this inspection.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
Children are making progress with their education from their starting points. When children face challenges or setbacks in education, the staff and manager proactively advocate for them. This means that children access education with support tailored to their individual needs. Staff encourage children to persevere with education and work through challenges and not give up. This is because staff know how important education is to the children. Staff also encourage and support children to engage in age- appropriate independence skills.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
Children engage in activities that they enjoy. One child enjoys spending time with their friend who lives far from the home. Staff support the child to maintain contact by taking them to see their friends.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
Staff regularly spend quality time with the children. When asked what they like about the home, a child said ‘the staff’. This is testament to the strong relationships that children have built with the staff in a short time. Children’s bedrooms are personalised. They have a say in how their bedrooms are designed and decorated.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
Feedback from external professionals is very good. A professional said that they are happy with the care provided to children and that they have noticed a significant change in their child since they began living at the home. Information received from families is also very good. One family member said, ‘I am very happy with the home. The staff are looking after my child’s needs and supporting them to get back on a good track.’
p.3
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
Staff have done the organisation’s mandatory safeguarding training. They are confident in their roles of reporting and escalating any child protection concerns and they understand the whistle-blowing policy.
p.3
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
Staff have a good understanding of the children and the risks that they face. Staff are sensitive in how they approach and support children to identify and understand the risks posed to them. Staff access a wide range of training. This includes therapeutic training that provides staff with the knowledge and skills that they need to care for children.
p.3
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
There have been no incidents of children being missing from care or physical interventions involving the children living at the home at the time of this inspection. However, when interventions have occurred in the past, staff have not always received debriefs. This means that leaders and managers have not always scrutinised and reviewed the appropriateness of physical interventions effectively. Inspection report for children's home: SC457272 4 Allegations against staff are promptly investigated and well managed. Parents and professionals say that they are happy with how children are safeguarded. One parent said, ‘My child definitely feels safe living in the home.’
p.3
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
The children’s guide is child-friendly and gives children a sense of what it is like living at the home. The guide contains information to help children to understand who to speak to if they are worried or if they need support outside of the home.
p.4
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
Overall, staff keep children safe. External professionals are positive about the care that is provided to children. Children are vocal in their views on feeling safe at the home and who to speak to if they have concerns.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
The manager holds a level 5 diploma in leadership and management. She registered with Ofsted in June 2024. She is a good role model for staff. The manager and staff are well supported by a deputy manager.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
The manager is committed to providing good care. She talks about the children with dedication. She is ambitious for children and has a good understanding of their needs. The manager and staff are child focused. A parent said, ‘I feel the manager runs the home well and they care.’
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
The manager challenges other professionals if she is dissatisfied with the services being provided to children. This is reflected in the feedback from professionals. A professional said, ‘The manager is a good advocate for the child.’ The manager regularly consults with children, professionals and parents.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
The managers have effective management systems. Records are of a good standard and provide information about the care provided to children. Managers regularly audit care practice and the operation of the home and generate actions to address any shortfalls or learning.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
The manager follows good safe recruitment practices that help to prevent unsuitable adults from working with children.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
The manager has high expectations of the staff. The staff are happy and fulfilled in their roles. Staff receive reflective supervision and say that they feel listened to. They can discuss any concerns and they receive feedback on their performance. However, staff in their probation have not always received regular supervision in line with the organisation’s supervision policy. This means that opportunities may be missed for staff to formally reflect on their practice and development.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
Before the current manager came into post, leaders and managers did not always fully consider the risks to all children. This resulted in a child being arrested and an unplanned ending occurring for the child. Inspection report for children's home: SC457272 5
