p.1

The provision is good

Children enter this setting happily and are warmly welcomed by the kind and caring childminder. They immediately snuggle in for cuddles and settle in quickly. Children have warm and affectionate bonds with the childminder, which helps them feel safe and secure. The childminder has high expectations for children's behaviour and is an excellent role model. When occasional minor disagreements happen, the childminder steps in quickly, reminding children why it is important to share toys or take turns. Children's communication and language are supported well. The childminder listens to the children with interest and asks them questions during their play. For example, she asks, 'Where are your ears and where is your nose?' when drawing a face. This helps to support children to become confident communicators.

The provision is good

There is a strong focus on outdoor learning and exploring nature. Children study life cycles and care for caterpillars until they turn into butterflies. The childminder encourages children to learn about and respect different types of wildlife. Children use their prior knowledge and understanding to think critically and answer questions. For example, they say, 'Look it's a cocoon, the butterfly is in there,' and they talk about the recent visit to the cinema, where they recall that in the film, 'Mikey the caterpillar turns into a butterfly.'

n The childminder's indoor and outdoor play areas are well resourced and offer children lots of challenge and excitement, which ignites their interest. For example, children roll cars down the large pipes and have races while counting 'one, two, three'. The childminder asks questions, such as 'How many cars do you have?' and 'Which car is the biggest?'. This helps to promote mathematical development. n The childminder provides an enriching outdoor environment where children develop good physical skills. They enjoy climbing on the slide to strengthen their core muscles. The childminder provides a sand tray, which the children decide to add water in. They scoop up the wet sand using cups and buckets. Children's communication and language skills are further supported as they hear rich vocabulary, such as 'gooey' and 'sloppy'. n The childminder creates an environment that supports the intent of an ambitious

curriculum. However, she does not always use her assessments of what the children already know and can do to further extend children's learning. For example, she provides a writing activity that is pitched too high for some children's stage of development. Consequently, at times, some children lose interest in their learning. n The childminder supports children to be independent and ready for the next

Children prepare their own snack and help the childminder to tidy up. n The childminder places a strong focus on giving children rich first-hand experiences. For example, they attend a local playgroup and a childminding group weekly, along with trips to the library, cinema, farm and country parks. This helps to build on children's prior knowledge and experiences and develops their social skills. n The childminder is experienced and constantly strives to improve her practice. She attends regular training and implements what she has learned to improve outcomes for the children. She networks closely with the local authority and other childminders to share ideas and practice. n The childminder has excellent partnerships with parents and other professionals.
