p.1

The provision is inadequate

Children's safety, good health and development are not fully supported by the childminder. The childminder has not engaged in enough purposeful and targeted professional development opportunities to raise the quality of children's care and education. Consequently, his knowledge of the requirements of the 'Statutory framework for the early years foundation stage' (EYFS) is weak. This has resulted in several breaches to requirements that do not fully promote children's safety or well-being. The childminder does not maintain the hygiene and cleanliness of the premises to a consistently good standard. This does not fully support children's good health. He does not ensure that children travel in car seats that are safe and suitable. This compromises children's safety during outings.

p.2

The provision is inadequate

Nonetheless, children behave well and they develop secure relationships with the childminder. Children feel settled in his care. For example, they show an interest in helping the childminder to put new batteries into the electronic toys. Children enjoy pushing a toy car backwards and forwards to the childminder. However, these experiences are limited. The childminder does not consistently put into place a meaningful and stimulating programme of activities for children. This does not fully support children's good learning and development.

p.2

need to do better?

n The childminder has begun to evaluate and review his practice to identify some areas for development. He has begun to seek some advice and support from a local authority early years adviser. The childminder has taken part in some online training from the local authority. However, this is not embedded enough to have a positive impact on his practice and raise the standards of care and education to a good level. n The childminder does not adequately risk assess and ensure the safety of car seats that are used to transport children in his vehicle. For example, children travel in car seats with loose or missing parts. This compromises children's safety in the event of a car accident. n The childminder does not maintain the premises to a hygienic and safe standard. He does not ensure that litter and food waste items are removed from the garden where children play. The childminder does not ensure that garden

equipment, such as lawn mowers are placed safely out of children's reach. He does not ensure that bathroom areas are maintained to a clean standard for use by children. Although the childminder took some action during the inspection to ensure children's safety, this lack of ongoing risk assessment and practice compromises children's good health and well-being. n The childminder does not make sure that children wash their hands before they eat. Additionally, the childminder does not ensure that children have access to

p.2

need to do better?

19 April 2024 adequate handwashing equipment to clean their hands after playing outside or using the toilet. This does not help children to learn to understand the importance of handwashing or limit the likelihood of cross-contamination and illness. n The childminder does not keep accurate records as per the requirements of the EYFS. For example, he does not keep a written record of complaints. This does not support the childminder to fully demonstrate how he continues to review his ability to meet the requirements of the EYFS. The childminder does not accurately record the times that children arrive at and leave the premises. These breaches to requirements do not support children's safety and well-being in the event of a safeguarding concern or allegation. n The childminder does not plan a broad programme of activities and experiences for children. He relies heavily on taking children on outings in the local area.

p.2

need to do better?

Some incidental learning takes place on these outings. For example, children find out about the changes in the seasons. However, these experiences are not enough to ensure that children receive an ambitious curriculum that further builds on their skills and knowledge. This does not help children to develop positive attitudes to learning or support them to make good progress with their development. n The childminder's interactions with children do not fully support their speech and language development. He does not consistently speak with or engage with children while they play. Consequently, children play alone with little input from the childminder. The childminder leaves the television on as children play. This does not help children to develop their listening skills. As a result, children are not well supported to grow their communication skills. n The childminder does not carry out the two-year progress checks for children.

p.3

need to do better?

This does not fully support parents to find out more about their child's progress and development. Furthermore, this does not support the childminder to appropriately think about and plan for children's needs and the next stage in their learning. n The childminder provides healthy snacks for children, such as fruit. However, he does not ensure that children have drinks that support their good oral health. The childminder offers juice for children to drink rather than water. This does not help children to learn habits that promote the good health of their teeth. n Parents and carers say that children feel settled in the care of the childminder. They say that the childminder finds out about children's likes and dislikes as well as their medical and dietary needs. Parents appreciate the daily messages and photos that they receive from the childminder about their children's daily experiences. n The childminder has a suitable knowledge of child protection. For example, he

has a broad understanding of the signs and symptoms of abuse and neglect. The childminder knows what to do in the event of a concern about a child or allegation of harm. However, the breaches to requirements do not ensure that the safeguarding of children in his setting is fully effective.
