p.1

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

The home has only been operational for a few months. The registered manager has succeeded in creating a home that has a family feel, where the child is well cared for and their views are listened to. The registered manager is passionate about ensuring that the child has a stable home environment and is supported to reach their full potential. The staff understand the child’s needs, risks, strengths and vulnerabilities.

p.2

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

The child has been registered with health professionals promptly and has attended appointments without delay. Staff have encouraged the child to prioritise their physical and mental health, and have promoted the benefits of healthy eating, a good routine and exercise.

p.2

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

The child has been given opportunities to participate in a wide range of activities both inside the home and in the community. The registered manager and staff have been proactive in making links with the local community and have registered the child with a local gym.

p.2

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

Staff have ensured that the child maintains their family relationships. This has been an area of strength. They support the child’s family-time arrangements, including overnight visits. Regular calls with family members take place to keep them updated about the child’s progress. One family member described the home and staff as “lovely” and said that they kept the family updated about everything. Another family member said that communication was particularly good, and they could see that the child had made progress in a very short period of time.

p.2

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

The registered manager and staff team have worked hard to ensure processes were in place to help the child settle and feel valued when they moved into the home. Staff have taken the time to find out the child’s interests and have built positive relationships with their family.

p.2

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

The registered manager has established links with professionals that support the child to return to school. Staff recognise when the child has been out of education for a while and when additional support needs to be put in place. Staff are committed to ensuring that the child’s worries and concerns are considered by professionals when drawing up plans for a school return. They have worked hard with the child to ensure that their reviews are reflected in all plans.

p.2

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Risk assessments are clear and detailed. Staff have used planned and informal discussions as an effective way of speaking with the child about risks. Inspection report for children's home: 2720850 3 There is a robust missing-from-home protocol in place. The management and staff team have succeeded at reducing missing-from-home episodes for the child. Staff have ensured that they are in close contact with the child, their family, any known friends and the professional network.

p.2

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Staff are trained in physical intervention; however, this has not been used. Staff have been successful in de-escalating situations without the need to use physical interventions. Consequences are rarely used.

p.3

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Staff receive a broad range of safeguarding training. Their learning is supported through regular supervision and team-meeting discussions. Staff know how to recognise, report and act on any safeguarding concerns that may arise. When children move into the home, they are told how to make a complaint, and this is set out clearly in the children’s guide.

p.3

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

The management and staff team work closely with the allocated social worker, health professionals and other professionals working with the child.

p.3

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Recruitment procedures follow safer recruitment guidelines, which provides assurance that the staff who are caring for the child are suitably vetted. The registered manager continues to recruit new members of staff, and there is an ongoing programme for training in place.

p.3

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

The registered manager is a consistent presence in the home, actively modelling the care that she wants to see the staff deliver. She has a wealth of experience and is skilled at ensuring that the child has the support they need.

p.3

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

The leadership and management team has a good understanding of safeguarding concerns and responds appropriately. The manager liaises with others, such as social workers, the local authority designated officer and parents, to promote an open and transparent approach to safeguarding. External feedback from professionals about the care provided to the child has been positive.

p.3

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

Staff induction is overseen by the manager, and feedback is provided to staff on their performance. Supervision and team meetings are used effectively. The child’s needs are discussed, and goals are set for the staff. The manager recognises the importance of supporting staff to reflect on their practice.

p.3

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

The staff are yet to undertake their therapeutic training as set out in the statement of purpose. The registered manager has a very clear vision for the provision, but the therapeutic support is very much in its infancy. The two psychotherapists are yet to start working with the staff or child. The registered manager will update her workforce development plan to set out the training needs for the team and any newly recruited staff members, and to review the statement of purpose. Inspection report for children's home: 2720850 4

p.3

Recommendation

 The registered person should ensure that they have a workforce plan that can fulfil the workforce-related requirements of Regulation 16, Schedule 1 (paragraphs 19 and 20). The plan should detail the necessary management and staffing structure, the experience and qualifications of staff currently working within the staffing structure and any further training required for those staff, to enable the delivery of the home’s statement of purpose.
