p.1

Information about this inspection

 the care of children  the safety of children  the effectiveness of leaders and managers. Inspectors have looked closely at the experiences and progress of children, using the social care common inspection framework. This assurance inspection was carried out under The Care Standards Act 2000 to assess the effectiveness of the service, how it meets the core functions of the service as set out in legislation, and to consider how well it complies with The Children’s Homes (England) Regulations 2015 and the ‘Guide to the Children’s Homes Regulations, including the quality standards’. Assurance inspection report for children’s home: 2613157 2

p.1

Findings from the inspection

We did not identify any serious or widespread concerns in relation to the care or protection of children at this assurance inspection.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

Children’s risk assessments provide information about their risks and vulnerabilities. This is to ensure that children receive well-planned responses from the adults who care for them. This helps staff to keep children safer.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

Children are developing trusting relationships with staff. Children are given time to build those relationships at their own pace. One child said they have a close relationship with a member of staff who they can speak to about worries or concerns.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

Children attend education regularly and are making progress. Staff work well with education providers to support children back into education. This has led to improved attendance for one child who had not been to school for some time.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

Children have a safer escape route from the property. The manager has removed the key lock from the front door to ensure that children and staff have a direct exit point in the event of an emergency.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

The registered manager ensures that staff have the necessary skills to care for children. All staff have now been trained in first aid and in their model of physical intervention. However, many staff have not yet completed the required qualification related to caring for children in a residential setting. This shortfall is an ongoing concern from the previous inspection.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

The presentation of the home has deteriorated. This is because damage caused to communal areas is not repaired in a timely manner. One child said that this impacts on how they feel about living in the home and they no longer invite their friends to visit. One child’s bedroom was cluttered and unsuitable for the child. Clothing and rubbish on the floor prevented easy access through the door. The registered manager addressed this immediately and made arrangements to move the child to another bedroom.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

Staff are trained to respond to children in a safe and consistent way. On one occasion, a child complained about being hurt when held by staff. The registered manager consulted with the designated officer and child’s social worker but did not complete an investigation. The manager did not notify Ofsted of this allegation against a member of staff. This prevents Ofsted from having oversight of significant events.
