Information about this inspection
the care of children the safety of children the effectiveness of leaders and managers. The inspector has looked closely at the experiences and progress of children, using the social care common inspection framework. This assurance inspection was carried out under the Care Standards Act 2000 to assess the effectiveness of the service, how it meets the core functions of the service as set out in legislation, and to consider how well it complies with The Children’s Homes (England) Regulations 2015 and the ‘Guide to the Children’s Homes Regulations, including the quality standards’. Assurance inspection report for children’s home: SC032468 2
p.1
Findings from the inspection
We did not identify any serious or widespread concerns in relation to the care or protection of children at this assurance inspection.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
Since the last inspection, two children have moved into the home. Leaders and managers made extensive enquiries with the children’s previous carers and local authorities to understand the children’s needs as thoroughly as possible before the children moved into the home. This helped staff to prepare for the children’s arrival.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
Children’s health needs are met well. Children are registered with local health services and attend appointments when required. In addition, staff and managers are proactive and ensure that specialist support is available for children. Some children have recently started to attend therapy sessions.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
Children’s care plans are specific to the needs of each child. These are updated to reflect risk and record children’s progress.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
There are high staffing levels to care for children, and there are clear behaviour support plans to support their needs. Staff support children to understand boundaries and routines. Incidents are managed well by staff and there is appropriate management overview.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
Some children are attending school and some are engaging in home tuition. However, one child is not engaging in education at all. The registered manager and staff are not effective in escalating their concerns and have not been able to support the child to overcome their fears of attending school.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
Staff say that they feel supported by the management team. Staff receive regular supervision and say they feel able to approach managers outside of formal supervision for support and advice.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
The home’s clinical therapist attends monthly team meetings. They offer staff space to reflect on incidents of concern as well as on their own practice. This helps to further assess children’s behaviours.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
The home’s physical environment is safe for children. The home is homely, clean and well maintained. Children’s bedrooms and communal spaces are well furnished, personalised and comfortable. There are no health and safety concerns. However, the internal monitoring and surveillance equipment detracts from a homely environment. Leaders say the equipment will be removed.
p.2
Findings from the inspection
Leaders and managers have not completed all of the actions required in the recent fire risk assessment. Assurance inspection report for children’s home: SC032468 3 Leaders and managers have taken effective action to meet five of the requirements and the recommendation from the last inspection. Two requirements have been restated. Assurance inspection report for children’s home: SC032468 4
