Information about this inspection

 the care of children  the safety of children  the effectiveness of leaders and managers. The inspector has looked closely at the experiences and progress of children, using the social care common inspection framework. This assurance inspection was carried out under the Care Standards Act 2000 to assess the effectiveness of the service, how it meets the core functions of the service as set out in legislation, and to consider how well it complies with The Children’s Homes (England) Regulations 2015 and the ‘Guide to the Children’s Homes Regulations, including the quality standards’. p.1

Findings from the inspection

We did not identify any serious or widespread concerns in relation to the care or protection of children at this assurance inspection.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

Children have positive experiences of moving to and from the home. Staff have been successful in supporting one child’s reunification with their family. This is a very good outcome for the child. Before children move to the home, the registered manager carries out an effective assessment of their needs, risks and behaviours. Before children move in, they visit the home and are provided with all the information they need about living at the home. This helps children settle in quickly.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

Children’s feedback about living at the home is mixed. One child said they like living at the home and that they feel safe and protected, but that they feel frustrated they are not in school. Another child said they moved to this home to be closer to their family but said they had been feeling unsafe following a recent incident.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

Staff support children with a wide range of activities in the local area and the wider community. For example, children enjoy go-karting, laser games, trampolining and participating in local youth groups and sports clubs. This helps the children to have a wide range of experiences and gain the confidence to be part of community clubs.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

Children’s health needs are well considered and met by staff. Staff work closely with a variety of health services and support children to attend all their healthcare appointments. This helps maintain children’s physical well-being.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

The home provides a nurturing environment. Children’s artwork is on display and bedrooms are personalised to children’s tastes. This provides children with a sense of belonging.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

Children’s care, behaviour and risk management plans are personalised to each child. They provide clear guidance to staff to meet the needs of children and help ensure that children’s needs are well understood. This has helped contribute to there being no physical interventions or incidents of children going missing from home, and significant incidents are infrequent.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

Staff complete a wide range of training courses, including in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, foetal alcohol syndrome, missing from care and self-harm. The registered manager has a training plan for staff for the rest of the year. This supports staff’s continuous professional development.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

External professionals speak highly of the registered manager and staff. One social worker said staff have an excellent understanding of their child and that they have started to see the child smile again since they moved to the home. Assurance inspection report for children's home: 2713919 3 The registered manager is child-focused and wants the best for children. He is supported by a committed staff team who share his vision. Staff said that their morale, team working and management support have improved.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

Staff encourage and support children to have time with their families. This helps children to keep in contact with people who are important to them.

p.3

Findings from the inspection

Children make mixed progress in their education. One child is attending school and working towards national qualifications. Another child has not been in full-time education since moving to the home. However, the manager has worked with other professionals to try and identify appropriate school provision for the child. In addition, they have advocated for additional tuition to be put in place, which the child is now engaging in.

p.3

Findings from the inspection

Following one recent incident when a child was threatened online, the manager promptly notified police and other relevant professionals. Sharing such information effectively helps ensure children remain safe. Assurance inspection report for children's home: 2713919 4
