p.1

Information about this inspection

 the care of children  the safety of children  the effectiveness of leaders and managers. The inspector has looked closely at the experiences and progress of children, using the social care common inspection framework. This assurance inspection was carried out under the Care Standards Act 2000 to assess the effectiveness of the service, how it meets the core functions of the service as set out in legislation, and to consider how well it complies with The Children’s Homes (England) Regulations 2015 and the ‘Guide to the Children’s Homes Regulations, including the quality standards’. Assurance inspection report for children’s home: SC457500 2

p.1

Findings from the inspection

We did not identify any serious or widespread concerns in relation to the care or protection of children at this assurance inspection.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

The three recommendations made at the last inspection have been met.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

Since the last inspection, one child has moved into the home. This was well planned and considerate of the other children already living in the home. The child benefitted from opportunities to visit the home before moving, and to meet the children and staff. He has settled well in the first two weeks with staff spending quality time with him to get to know one another.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

Children continue to progress well in education. Some attend school settings, and some receive personal tuition. Children enjoy educational activities with staff and tutors such as visiting local attractions and exploring their local communities. One child’s school is not in the local area and requires a lengthy journey. Staff take the child to school to ensure that they are supported before and after the school day. Older children are receiving support to explore post 16 options so they can have a voice in their future care planning.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

The number of incidents that have required physical restraint is reducing. Children have been supported to improve relationships with one another which has contributed to this reduction. There have been no further incidents of bullying, or children hurting one another. Staff have worked hard to drive improvements in this area of practice.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

The recording and reporting of incidents have improved. Staff have received training in this area. The manager has provided guidance individually and collectively to the team about the importance of concise record keeping. There were no further shortfalls identified in this area during this inspection.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

Children are given opportunities to discuss and reflect following incidents. The manager has improved this practice since the last inspection. Manager’s oversight is evident throughout the records which allows her the opportunity to evaluate any trends or patterns in children’s behaviours.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

When children have bruises or marks staff use professional curiosity to establish the cause. There is good use of body maps as a safeguarding tool, and some examples of excellent communication with other safeguarding partners such as placing social workers and LADO colleagues. This ensures incidents and accidents for disabled children are evaluated effectively and used as learning opportunities. Assurance inspection report for children’s home: SC457500 3 The manager is experienced and qualified. She has worked with disabled children for many years. She is committed to making the improvements identified at the last inspection. Work is underway in those areas, with some improvements already embedded throughout management systems.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

The manager has taken a proactive approach to staff development. This has included strengthening training and development opportunities for staff to improve their knowledge and understanding of care practice. Where shortfalls have been identified in relation to staff knowledge and development, plans are developing to rectify this and provide staff with the training and development opportunities they need. This develops staff learning and helps to keep children safe.

p.3
