p.1

Information about this inspection

 the care of children  the safety of children  the effectiveness of leaders and managers. The inspector has looked closely at the experiences and progress of children, using the social care common inspection framework. This assurance inspection was carried out under the Care Standards Act 2000 to assess the effectiveness of the service, how it meets the core functions of the service as set out in legislation, and to consider how well it complies with The Children’s Homes (England) Regulations 2015 and the ‘Guide to the Children’s Homes Regulations, including the quality standards’. Assurance inspection report for children’s home: 2730253 2

p.1

Findings from the inspection

We did not identify any serious or widespread concerns in relation to the care or protection of children at this assurance inspection.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

One child was living in the home at the time of the inspection.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

The child’s progress in the past four months is nothing short of exceptional. The child is back in school, and is doing well, after being out of education for two years. Their physical and emotional health has improved with a huge drop in incidents of self-harm.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

The child has recently experienced their first live football match. They enjoyed the buzz of the crowd and joined in with the singing and (polite) chanting. They proudly showed a video and photos of the game and were obviously thrilled to have been able to go.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

The child is a very talented artist. Their artwork is on display throughout the house. They are helping staff to reconfigure the rooms in the home, improving the layout and helping with design features.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

The child spends a few hours every week at the company’s head office in a ‘well- being’ role, which involves supporting the head office staff, helping, and making tea. They get paid for this work and enjoy being with the adults in the office.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

Staff speak highly of the child, recognising the progress they have made and how their confidence has grown. Staff said, ‘[Name of child] has blown us away with their progress’ and described how they have ‘come on leaps and bounds’. They said that they are so proud of everything [name of child] has achieved and commented on their growth in confidence, describing them as ‘so charismatic and full of life’.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

Staff provide consistently good care for the child. The child has a good rapport with staff, there is lots of friendly banter and laughter in the home. Staff have been resilient, continuing to build positive relationships with the child despite dealing with some previous, very difficult, situations.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

The manager has amended the complaints process, making sure that the child receives a response to any complaints they make. Staff understand their role in managing any complaints from the child.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

The child is helped to see and speak on the phone to the people who are important in their life. They have asked for some changes to the arrangements, and these are being explored by the responsible individual. Assurance inspection report for children’s home: 2730253 3 The child clearly plays an integral role in decision-making in the home, whether it is the colour of paint on the walls, reconfiguration of rooms, staff appraisals, staffing arrangements, activities, or family time arrangements.

p.2

Findings from the inspection

Staff understand the child’s vulnerabilities and risks and the restrictions identified in the legal order. Staff and leaders work hard to balance the required staffing numbers and supervision with allowing the child more personal space. The child said, ‘Staff are there and around and watching but not in my face all the time.’

p.3

Findings from the inspection

Staff have simplified the risk assessment so that it provides more clarity around known and current risks and is not such a historical document. Staff find this easier to understand and implement, which helps to mitigate the risks and keep the child safe. They identify triggers and potential issues, intervening early to prevent escalation. This has helped to significantly reduce the number of physical interventions. A member of staff said, ‘We are getting better at understanding what is happening and intervening earlier. We are preventing the incident rather than dealing with it.’

p.3

Findings from the inspection

Staff understand their role in safeguarding and whistle-blowing. They have recently received training on allegations and disclosures and are clear on their roles in keeping the child safe. Staff have also received training in a range of courses delivered externally and internally, giving them a wide breadth of knowledge and improving their skills to meet the child’s needs.

p.3

Findings from the inspection

The registered manager is currently absent from the home. The responsible individual has put interim arrangements in place to ensure consistency. The deputy manager and team leaders are supported by the responsible individual and managers of other homes in the organisation.

p.3

Findings from the inspection

The leadership team has improved oversight of the home. New auditing tools are being used to review and monitor the quality of care, the quality of the child’s experiences and the progress they are making.

p.3

Findings from the inspection

All the requirements made at the previous inspection have been met. There are no new requirements or recommendations made at this inspection. Assurance inspection report for children’s home: 2730253 4
