p.2
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
The child living at the home has remained happy and settled since the last inspection. The child refers to this as their home and staff as their family.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
Staff are proactive at encouraging the child to engage in alternative education. Staff have aspirations for the child to continue learning when they complete their exams this year. Staff encourage the child to consider their future career and life goals and support them to look at all options available to them. As a result, the child now engages in education and has career ambitions for the future.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
The child’s health needs are supported and met by staff. The child is supported to access additional services for their health in a way that is sensitive to their needs. Staff identify support to help to educate the child about sexual health and relationships.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
The child is supported to spend time with their family. Staff supervise this when it is an identified need in the child’s care plan. They advocate for the child’s views about family time to ensure that this is a positive experience. The child is supported to celebrate family birthdays and celebrations, including buying or making gifts to send to family.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
Staff educate the child to develop their independence skills to prepare them for adulthood. The child has said they would like to have their own flat in the future. The staff have put together an independence information pack to support the child, which they will be able to keep and refer to when they move on to live more independently.
p.3
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
The child benefits from positive relationships with the staff and feels safe to talk to staff about any worries or concerns they have. As a result, the child seeks support and is safer since living in this home.
p.3
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
Staff follow the procedures when a child goes missing from home, and they make sure that the child is welcomed home in a warm and positive manner. The manager spends time with the child following them being missing from home, to enable them the opportunity to share any worries. However, the manager does not evaluate the records thoroughly to identify any learning opportunities for all.
p.3
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
Staff and managers make sure that allegations made by the child about adults are reported. However, on one occasion, leaders and managers did not send a notification to Ofsted in a timely manner. In addition, the notification was missing significant information. This reduces the oversight of the regulator. Inspection report for children’s home: SC456413 4 Risk management plans are in place that identify known and potential risks and include clear strategies to minimise them. These are working documents, kept under review and amended to reflect any emerging risks. These measures help to support the child’s safety and welfare.
p.3
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
The child is supported to access external agencies when there is risk identified. For example, following an incident involving alcohol misuse, a referral was made to the appropriate service. Following this, the child was able to reflect on the risk, and there have not been any further incidents relating to alcohol misuse.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
In addition to having experience, the manager has nearly completed the relevant leadership and management qualification. They are registered to manage this home and another in the organisation. The manager makes sure that she divides her time equally between the two homes. Team leaders and an experienced deputy manager provide her with support.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
Staff say that they feel supported by the manager. They receive monthly supervision that enables them to personally reflect on their practice and skills. External professionals say that there is excellent communication with the manager and staff, so everyone is kept up to date about any changes to the child’s needs.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
The manager ensures that staff are appropriately trained. Most of the staff are permanent. Bank staff are used to cover gaps but are considered members of the team and know the children well. This means that the child experiences minimal disruption.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
The home is warm and welcoming. It is decorated with the child’s input, for example, there are pieces of artwork completed by the child on the wall. However, the outdoor area is not safe and inviting for the child to use. In addition, some wear and tear in the kitchen and lounge has not been repaired.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
The manager is able to advocate on behalf of the child and challenge incorrect details on the child’s record effectively. This ensures that assessments are relevant to the specific needs of the child so that the right support can be provided. Inspection report for children’s home: SC456413 5
