p.1

The provision is good

Children flourish emotionally at this nurturing setting, thanks to the childminder's focus on building strong bonds. The childminder knows children well. She is very attentive to their individual needs and consequently, children are eager and ready to learn. The childminder supports children's self-help skills at routine times of the day. For instance, she encourages children to tidy up after they have finished playing. They become confident and engaged learners and celebrate their successes with 'high fives'. The childminder is a good role model. She teaches children about good manners, how to share and use 'gentle hands' by encouraging them to follow her lead. Children behave very well and are learning about what is expected of them.

The provision is good

The experienced childminder has high expectations for children's learning and development. She supports children to develop a love of books and reading. For example, she introduces favourite stories that link to the activities. As they play, children remember stories, acting them out and reinforcing their learning. The childminder provides intriguing activities. Children are inquisitive and demonstrate their impressive focus as they play with magnetic shapes. The childminder encourages the children to talk about and describe the patterns that they have made and how to continue to build on it. They persevere, celebrating when they complete this task. Children are developing the kinds of attitudes that prepare them well for the next stage in their learning.

n The childminder uses relevant guidance to help her to provide each child with a broad and balanced curriculum. She uses her good knowledge of children's interests and their current capabilities to plan individual support. However, on occasion, the childminder does not encourage children to investigate their own ideas further, to help them become the most effective, independent learners. n The childminder provides lots of opportunities for children to learn about leading a healthy lifestyle. Young children are encouraged to access the toilet independently and to wash their hands before and after food. She implements robust hygiene routines and talks to children about why these are important. This contributes to children's overall good health and well-being. n Mathematics is integrated into the childminder's daily activities. Mathematical concepts and language are continuously woven into children's play. Children are

The childminder models effectively and provides reassurance to help boost children's confidence and self-esteem. Children are becoming motivated and eager learners. n The childminder provides a broad range of social experiences for children. She frequently takes them to toddler groups and other local activities. For example, during Chinese New Year the childminder took children to visit a Chinese celebration. She later introduced related items into children's play, to help them remember and build on this experience further. These activities build children's

social confidence and help them learn about their local community and the wider world. n The childminder builds positive relationships with parents. Written comments indicate that parents are happy with the provision and that they value the safe and happy environment created for children. The childminder provides parents with regular updates about their child's development and next steps for learning. This promotes continuity in children's care and learning. n The childminder is knowledgeable and passionate about her work with children. She places high priority on professional development and is very reflective. The childminder identifies training based on the needs of the children she is caring for. She accurately identifies gaps in her own practice and seeks to improve her skills and knowledge further. This helps to ensure that children receive a good quality of care and education.
