p.1

The provision is good

The childminder provides a welcoming, homely environment where children feel happy, safe and secure. She places a strong focus on building their social and emotional skills as the foundation for their learning. Young children move around confidently and make choices about what to do. For example, they decide to play with the toy kitchen and name the different foods they have put on the plate. The childminder boosts children's self-esteem, praising them for using good manners and for being gentle when they stroke the cat.

p.2

The provision is good

The childminder tailors her curriculum to the needs and interests of each child. She builds on what they already know and can do to plan varied learning opportunities that support them to make good progress. For example, when young children can count to 15, she then supports them to count to 20 and provides interesting activities for them to do this, such as counting the birds in the trees.

n The childminder builds close relationships with children and they confidently seek her out for comfort. They enjoy cuddling up to her and pretending to be a baby. They know that they can ask for their comforters if they need them and quickly overcome their anxiety about visitors. The childminder gives children lots of encouragement and support, praising them as they play and explore and acknowledging their achievements. For example, she makes positive comments when young children recognise numerals. n The childminder works with parents to find out what children can already do when they start attending and reviews their progress frequently to identify what they need to do next. She uses this as the basis of her provision. The childminder knows children well and carefully adapts her practice to meet their needs and interests. She knows when they need extra support and changes her provision to take account of this. For example, when children are unsettled she

works hard to build up their confidence and resilience. n The childminder understands the importance of consistency for children and works closely with families to ensure a shared approach to setting boundaries and meeting each child's needs. For example, she discusses healthy lunch box contents with them. n The childminder ensures that children follow healthy lifestyles. She provides a variety of fruit for snack and reminds children to have regular drinks of water. Children learn to wash and dry their hands. They go out daily for exercise and fresh air. For example, the childminder takes them to local parks and woods. n The childminder places a strong emphasis on children learning about risk. She explains why they need to sit properly on the chair and why the step stool must be up against the cupboard if they want to stand on it. She consistently reminds

19 February 2024 children about safe practice, such as keeping their eyes open when they walk. n The childminder talks to children about what they are doing and introduces new vocabulary during conversations. For example, when children play with toy ice creams, she teaches them the word 'scoop'. However, on occasion, the childminder does not model language as accurately as possible to extend children's communication skills. n The childminder has a secure understanding of the possible signs that a child may be at risk of harm and knows what to do if she identifies concerns. She talks to children and parents about staying safe online.
