p.1

The provision is outstanding

The childminder celebrates children in this setting. She is extremely passionate, and children thrive in her care. Children talk about their past experiences and share the knowledge that they have learned. For instance, they talk about the penguins they read about in a book earlier in the week. Children then model how a penguin walks by waddling. They are deeply engaged in their play. Children choose toys to support their learning and make links to their home lives. For example, they talk about when they have had building work done at home or where they have parents in certain jobs. Children happily pack their toy toolbox to take on their imaginary bus journey to work. They talk about what they need and what they might use it for. Children cook in a pretend kitchen and talk about the ingredients they need for the meal they are preparing.

p.2

The provision is outstanding

The childminder embeds a curriculum that is ambitious and allows children to explore their curiosity, particularly surrounding nature and the outdoors. Children delight in sharing their past learning, such as going to the woods, picking up sticks and crunching the leaves. The childminder shares and celebrates stories with children. Children act out a story about blowing leaves, moving their bodies while pretending to be the wind as the assistant tells a story using rich vocabulary.

p.2

The provision is outstanding

The way in which the childminder introduces children to new vocabulary is exemplary. The childminder and her assistant give children a rich and varied vocabulary. They provide examples of words so that children can get a deeper understanding of their meaning. For example, children play in a shaving foam painting activity and describe their pictures as having 'fluffy peaks'. Children squeeze play dough and describe the texture as 'squidgy'. They later use this language in other contexts, showing their understanding of the words. Children show remarkable levels of behaviour. They develop excellent listening and attention skills and learn to treat others with respect.

p.2

need to do better?

n The childminder thoughtfully designs the curriculum with a clear purpose. She ensures that all children have plenty of opportunities to practise their skills and build on what they already know and can do. For example, when children are learning about colours, the childminder encourages them to make play dough and carefully mix food colouring to make different colours. They then talk about where else they may find these colours. n The childminder delivers intentional and exceptional teaching and is highly attuned to children's individual needs. She models good communication skills and understands the importance of asking open-ended questions. Children are offered ample time to think and process information before they respond.
