p.1

The provision is good

The childminder provides a welcoming and safe environment for the children. This helps them feel happy and secure. Children have formed strong bonds with the childminder. They involve her in their play and clearly enjoy her company. Children are inquisitive learners and explore the resources available to them. The childminder plans and provides a curriculum for children to help them build on their skills for the future. For example, as children create towers from the building blocks, the childminder talks to them about numbers and shapes to incorporate mathematical learning.

p.2

The provision is good

Children enjoy songs and rhymes at this setting. They use musical instruments and other props to enhance their enjoyment of this activity. The childminder sings and enthusiastically encourages children to join in. For example, children move in time to the music and know the actions of 'The Wheels on the Bus'. Children who speak English as an additional language are well supported, such as when the childminder encourages them to sing songs. A child from a French family recognises and responds to the music of 'Frere Jacques'.

p.2

The provision is good

The childminder promotes positive behaviour. She helps children to understand their feelings and acknowledges their emotions with them. She encourages good manners, and they are learning when to say please and thank you to the childminder and to each other. The childminder is generous with the praise she gives the children, which helps them understand when and what they are doing well.

need to do better?

n The childminder knows children well. She talks about the progress they have made from their starting points. Accurate observations help her to plan appropriate next steps. However, on occasion, the childminder does not identify when children need more challenge to extend their learning further, particularly for older children. n The childminder teaches children about good health throughout daily routines and activities. Children are provided with healthy snacks as they happily sit together at the table. The childminder reminds children about the importance of washing their hands before eating, especially after playing. This helps children to learn how to follow a healthy lifestyle. n The childminder places a strong emphasis on communication and language. She ensures children hear a range of vocabulary and talks to them throughout the day. She encourages babies and younger children to repeat words and sounds.

They learn to wash their hands before mealtimes and begin to use cutlery to feed themselves. The childminder supports children when they are toilet training. She offers lots of praise and encouragement when they begin to use the potty. This helps children to gain the necessary independence in readiness for school. n The childminder takes children out in the local community and visits the local parks. Children learn about dangers in the environment. For example, they understand that they need to 'stop, look and listen' as they cross the road. This helps children learn how to keep themselves safe. n The recently installed garden playroom is a good addition to the childminding premises. However, there are times when the numbers of children in attendance mean that the limitations of just this space, do not offer sufficient room for

children, particularly the youngest to move around without obstruction. n Partnerships with parents are strong. The childminder speaks with them daily and shares updates to their learning and development through the online application. This helps parents to support and extend their children's learning at home. Feedback from parents is positive. They comment on the childminder's 'affectionate and caring presence' and flexibility with children's daily routines to complement their experiences at home. n The childminder ensures that all mandatory training is up to date. She receives regular updates from her local authority, as well as a professional childcare association, to ensure she is aware of any changes to guidance. The childminder is reflective and seeks regular feedback to ensure she can continue to evaluate the service she provides.
