p.1

The provision is good

Children demonstrate that they feel at home in this childminder's care. They know where toys are stored and are confident to help themselves. The childminder sits at the children's level and plays alongside them. When children struggle to fit pieces of a jigsaw puzzle together, she encourages them to keep trying. The childminder gives children 'high fives' for their efforts and achievements. Children show good levels of engagement as they play with activities they enjoy.

p.2

The provision is good

The childminder supports children to learn about mathematical concepts as they play. She plans and provides activities to encourage children to match, count and use mathematical language. Children confidently count different faces on cards. When a child struggles, she supports them to slow their counting down, pointing to each face in turn as they say a number. Children play well together. They take turns and concentrate as they play a matching game. Each time they make a matching set of animals, they gleefully announce that they are a winner. As Children build towers with wooden bricks, the childminder demonstrates how she has made the base of her tower sturdy and strong. Children copy so that they can also build tall towers.

She encourages children to take some responsibility, such as to pour their own drinks and tidy away the toys that they have been playing with. n The childminder knows the children in her care well. She understands their interests and knows what they enjoy playing with. The childminder has a clear curriculum intent, which focuses on children being confident to communicate, develop social skills and be independent in their self-care. The childminder aims to give children a memorable childhood. She plans experiences and activities

that cover all areas of learning and development. However, the childminder does not always use assessment information accurately to focus planning precisely enough on what individual children need to learn next. n The childminder takes children to the local toddler group and regularly meets with other childminders. Children have opportunities to make new friends and to play and socialise with other children of the same age. n The childminder recognises that some children struggle to express their feelings. She uses games to help children express how they are feeling and recognise the feelings of others. The childminder speaks to children with respect. Children

Children spend time dressing dolls, brushing their hair and rocking their 'babies' to sleep. The childminder sensitively and appropriately intervenes to extend children's play. She suggests what they could do next, such as to give their 'baby' a bottle or to change their 'baby's' nappy. n Children display a strong interest in books. They confidently choose from the wide range of books that the childminder has on offer. Children enjoy looking at books independently as well as listening to the childminder read. As the childminder reads stories, she draws children's attention to the pictures to encourage them to talk about the events and characters in the story. However, the childminder does not encourage parents to read with their child at home and

to develop their child's love of stories and books further. n Parents are full of praise for the childminder. They comment that their children enjoy attending her setting. The childminder shares detailed information with parents about their child's day.
