p.1

The provision requires improvement

The childminder provides a warm and welcoming environment for the children. As a result, children are happy and confident in her care. The childminder provides opportunities for children to build with bricks, enjoy small world play and take part in drawing activities. They also enjoy trips out in the local area. This provides children with variety in what they do each day. However, the childminder is not making effective use of assessment to ensure she is providing activities that are securely based on what children need to learn next. Furthermore, the limited assessment means that the childminder is not always able to identify gaps in children's learning.

p.2

The provision requires improvement

The children generally behave well. The childminder supports children to understand the impact of their actions. However, there are occasions when she does not explain why some behaviour is unacceptable. This results in children not being clear about what is expected of them and why. That said, the children are learning to share with their peers and to take turns. Furthermore, the childminder is skilful in helping children to manage their emotions when, for example, they do not get their own way.

need to do better?

n The childminder has made some progress since the last inspection. She has put measures in place to ensure children are supervised when playing outdoors. Additionally, she has improved her knowledge and understanding of safeguarding. These improvements ensure children remain safe in her care. n Although the childminder has undertaken some professional development since the last inspection, she is not using her learning to improve her practice. The childminder has developed some understanding of the curriculum and what she knows children need to learn next. However, this is based on her knowledge of what children need to learn in preparation for school rather than securely based on her assessment of what individual children need to learn next. As a result, the curriculum for individual children is not well sequenced. n Children enjoy their time in the childminder's care. They are able to choose from

the resources made available and confidently ask to take part in different activities, such as drawing decorations on preformed Christmas trees. Young children show their developing pencil control and recognition of colours. n The childminder is keen that children learn good manners and gives gentle reminders to help them learn these skills. However, there are occasions when children display unwanted behaviour, and the childminder is less effective at helping them to understand the dangers of, for example, climbing on the dining chairs. n The childminder is aware of the need to support children's speech and language

12 December 2023 development. She talks to the children about what they are doing and engages them in conversation. This helps children to develop their spoken language. n Partnerships with parents are positive. Parental feedback shows that they are happy with the care provided for their children and how they have developed while in the childminder's care. The childminder shares with the parents what their children have been doing while in her care. However, the lack of focus on precise assessment means that parents cannot always share in and extend their children's learning at home. n The childminder helps children to develop their understanding of a healthy lifestyle. Children are offered routine opportunities to develop their physical skills through trips to the local park and play centre. Additionally, children understand the need to wash their hands after using the toilet and before eating their snack

p.2

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The childminder understands her responsibilities to safeguard children. She has updated her knowledge of the signs and symptoms that may alert her to a child being at risk of harm. She is aware of wider safeguarding issues that may affect children and what to do should she have concerns. The childminder ensures that the areas that children play in are safe and secure, and she supervises children well.
